Wine isnt cheap either, and you generally have to head to the LCBO to get it in Ontario. |

I can't figure it out. Raspberries were apparently "destroyed" by the heat and a small punnet (1 & 1/4 cups) costs $4.99. A handful of cherries was $1.64 (lunch yesterday), ten apples, smallish gala, $8.43...costs go up and down weekly.
As an aside we grow our own raspberries and are amazed every year when we see the price they charge for them in the stores. Mrs_P makes the most amazing raspberry jam and raspberry syrup with them.:):thumbsup: |
Re: A weeks shopping
I found it quite funny that the UK's 'cheap' wine imports mostly involving France, Spain or other such european or African origins were the expensive ones back in Canada. As an avid wine fan (mostly whites granted, reds give me headaches & mucho dehydration) the cheapie wines in Canada tended to be Californian or BC wines, one name springs to mind as a very decent quality white wine from Cali... Blossom Hill I think its called, lovely fruity flavour & not to sour/dry or sweet/sugary, very mid range. I think there was also a Quebec wine that sold rather cheaply of average standards called 'Notre Vin d'Maison' (translated, Our House Wine... how original *lol*) and I think one called La Fourberge or something along those lines?? Think that last one was local produced in Quebec but may be wrong.
Personally, I always enjoyed Australian & New Zealand chardonays & semillion chardonays or reisling (certain names only as some can be overly sweet) which were always the priciest at the SAQ or grocery stores in Montreal... guess since it takes longer to travel from the land of Oz to Canada then it does the UK, that may add on some $$ to the sell price... also more rare to find in Canada & more unpredictable with stock on shelves. Definately something I'm going to miss when we go back to Canada next year *sigh* :( |

We're mostly red-drinkers and find that the Ozzie and Chilean wines seem to offer the best bang-for-buck. Prices seems broadly similar to what we'd pay in the UK (albeit a much higher proportion of our salaries than there). We do find ourselves drinking beer when eating out more often; although fortunately BC has a reasonable brewing industry so that's not such a bad thing.

Re: A weeks shopping
Probably depends on the vintage year too, aged wines can get quite pricey! I'm in agreement with you though for fairly young vintages of Chataux Neuf Du Pape was around $20-$30 back when I was drinking reds.
