We are finally on our way to Calgary
We are so excited and in disbelief that we would like to share our experience with BE as without the advice and kindness people have shown we wouldn't be in this situation as quickly.
At last the moment has come as we are now busy packing up our belongings getting ready to embark on the most exciting journey of our lives. I must admit it has been very frustrating along the way and at times we thought this time would never come. Now we can't believe it and have to keep pinching ourselves as we sort through our stuff that we plan to take. With commitment and the never give up attitude has finally paid off. As my o/h passed his Red Seal and has landed a permanent job offer with an electrical firm in Calgary. So LMO in place, flights booked, packers due to pack our stuff on 11th Aug. 4th of Sept here we come.
We don't know anyone in Calgary but the thought of building a network again and starting over is very refreshing, exciting and a little daunting, can't wait. Luckily, our settlement person is kindly meeting us from the airport and she has also helped find our rental property and etc and this is for no cost whatsoever to us. Only on the proviso that we consider her as our realtor when we are ready to purchase a property.
I would like to thank anyone who has taken the time to read the ramblings of this very excited person and to thank the people on BE whose advice has been very valuable.
Will keep you posted on how things pan out.
Regards

Thanks we hope we do as well. Had a look at your blog and really enjoyed the James Taylor on u tube as he is also one of our favourites especially, his rendition of Carol Taylor's You got a friend. It must have been great seeing him live.
We noticed that you live in Okotoks how do you find it as this is one of the places we are considering moving to.

Glad you liked the blog...there's stuff on there going back to when we first arrived last October.
JT was superb - a great entertainer. I (Eamonn) had wanted to see him for years and it was great to get an opportunity to do so.
As for Okotoks, it is suiting us well enough so far. Certainly a nice town with most day to day needs well covered and one of its mild weaknesses (needs a few more restaurants) currently being addressed with recent openings and ongoing construction. However, IF our lives revolved around getting to downtown Calgary during the rush hour and home again in the evening peak, (they don't - Janet works in a real estate office south of here in High River and I am coming to the end of my realtor licensing courses), then, like another BE poster (Lorna D I think), we would be moving from Okotoks to Calgary proper.
You hear some folk say they can get from here to downtown Calgary in 45 minutes...you'd be very fortunate to do that in rush hour. So think about what your personal circumstances will be and bear that in mind. When we were looking, we toured a number of the communities on the southern edge of Calgary (Cranston, Auburn Bay, Silverado, Chapparal, Evergreen, etc) and to be honest, we think we could have lived in any of them - although they perhaps lack a smidge of individuality versus Okotoks. Be realistic about your needs and don't be afraid to do your own research without your realtor in tow. This is great for confidence building and helps you to get to grips with the layout of Calgary and surrounds. Also don't be afraid to be assertive if your realtor seems to have their own favourite areas they seem keen to show you, despite your expressed needs.
We hope you'll be very happy.

Hi the realtor we are using is GMAC Stagecoach and the lady who is helping us settle in is Helen Parnell, who is a British Expat herself. She was highly recommended to us by our immigration consultant who is based in the UK. Who also has been very good.
