Default Warning! Dont let your PR card Expire!

Warning to All:

Forgetting to renew your PR cards before they expire should be avoided. The current process time is 158 days to have them renewed.
Not only does this jeapordize foreign travel for us- quite unsettling when you have aging family in the UK, but it is also posing some problems for my 16 year old son who cannot get a part time job because he needs a SIN number.

Just save yourself some hassle and jumping through hoops- renew!

We obtained SIN for all of our kids without PR cards. The COPR was all we needed.

And, as has been debated on here many times, travel without a PR card is not impossible, nor even difficult. So in the event of say a family emergency I wouldn't think twice about travel back to UK without a PR card.

I still cant understand why so many PR's of British citizenship let them expire. Its valid for 5 years and after 3 years of arriving you are eligible to apply for Canadian citizenship.
Now I know some dont because they dont meet the residency of 1095 days out of 1460 days but if you do meet it why arent you taking it out?

Cos it's easier to complain about the inefficiency of others than to do things yourself!

Because we don't want to fork out another $200 for a nice bit of plastic when it's going to be taken away from us in a matter of months, and replaced with a shoddy laminated bit of paper that we just forked out $600 for?

I was one day away from mailing off the replacement PR card paperwork, when the citizenship date came through - phew!

Now I am left with the usual conundrum of "what do do". Do I try to get four Canadian passports turned around in about 12 days (at the cost of nearly $400 that I didn't budget on spending this month) in order to ease my return from a trip to the UK - or do I plead lack of time and bring a few utility bills, school reports and my husband's warrant card as proof that we do actually live here, while waving around a crappy citizenship card that apparently means nothing?

I dont understand why anyone would renew their PR card if they qualified for citizenship after three years here instead anyway.

Why do you need 4 Canadian passports ? The UK ones will get you back in.
Its nice just to have that Citizenship aspect just in case you do something naughty meaning we cant deport you

Ann, what is the issue here? You will have British passports, return tickets and Canadian citizenship certificates. What more do you need?

Because on every other thread recently, when returning into Canada, a British passport and a Canadian citizenship card (which is NOT suitable as a travel document) are apparently not strictly sufficient to prove your status here.

There have been so many discussions on this point on the forum - but I suspect we'll wing it anyway. I mean, we look harmless enough.

A Canadian citizenship card is prima facie EVIDENCE of Canadian citizenship so as long as you are in possession of such then you will be admitted. As for status well it doesnt matter as you are a Canadian citizen and you cannot be refused entry regardless of your status.
I agree on the UK passport issue but as been hashed out many times if you have legal status here not to many have been refused entry its more of satisfying the airline under R148 of IRPA.

In our case it was lack of organization/incompetance on my part (ie I forgot!)

We have done it now though... hopefully it won't be much longer before we are called for the test.
