Hello everyone. Can anyone please tell me >whilst i am awaiting for my PR, if i am able to volunteer within my future step sons school . Do i need to apply for anything from CIC.. ..?

Thanks.......also..this volunteering may be as simple as listening to the kids read....(is part of a parent/child thing)...or helping out in the school library. Thanks Again. *S*

I've been trying to answer this question for myself but can't find a concrete answer on the CIC website, except the excerpt below. It has been suggested on the Canadian Immigration forum a few times that volunteering is a breach of your conditions of stay as a visitor. I think the idea against it is you're possibly taking an opportunity or job away from a Canadian. If you find an official answer to this question, let me know!

http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/irpa/fs-workers.html

WHAT IS CONSIDERED WORK

The Act defines work as an activity for which an employee is paid a wage or commission, or one that competes with activities in the Canadian job market. In addition, work can also include some self-employment and unpaid employment to gain desirable work experience, such as a student internship.

WHAT IS NOT CONSIDERED WORK

The definition of work does not include:

- incidental volunteer work for which someone wouldn't normally be paid
- providing unpaid help to a friend or family member during a visit
- long-distance work (i.e. by telephone or Internet) by a visitor whose employer is outside of Canada

Not in my kids school district, as you have to provide proof of residency and a criminal record check before you can volunteer to do anything. Insurance liability is an issue as you cannot be covered by the blanket policy as a non-resident. Parents might also object as you are not "legal" (oh yes indeedy, watched that happen over and over). I think you might also be in breach of your visitor visa conditions too.

At my daughter's previous school I volunteered no problem, no questions asked. Didn't even occuur to me that it would be a problem and we don't yet have PR. I guess it depends on what you want to do and the individual school.

Good luck!

hmmmmmmm...some great points have been raised here. As i have co-ordinated volunteer programs, i can understand the legal issues. However, i wonder if ....reading at the school comes under that. As i will be his step mother...???.(6year old step son)
He brought home a note from school last week. With the school reqesting for parents to help out in reading groups.?....He will be so dissapointed if i can't do it.

I don't know if this helps - but here is a cut and paste of an email from a lovely lady who was living in BC for a few months who did voluntary work ..... and got a work visa for doing this .... It did give her a few advantages!!

You don't actually have to get a work visa for voluntary work, but UNICEF, who I worked for voluntarily, ask for this. I phoned the immigration dept 2 times and spoke to different people just to check that what they both said tied up as I heard different things from different people. The basic thing is that you _do not_ need a work permit to do voluntary work, but you need to be able to prove that you are not doing what would otherwise be a paid job for a Canadian. So, if you are working for an organisation such as UNICEF which has worldwide recognition then it is not too difficult, it is understood that these organisations work on voluntary support. But if you were to work at the local Pizza place voluntarily this would be a different matter, as you can see! However, if the organisation has a policy where you need one then that is a different issue. It is by no means a foregone conclusion, though, that you will be issued with one just because UNICEF asks for it.

The down side of having to get a work visa is that you need to leave the country to apply (we just went down to Seattle) and spend a day in the immigration dept with quite often very rude immigration officers who are very nasty to certain people, I don't know all the stories of course but they seemed very racist to me - when I was there just myself and another white man got our visa's, others waited in vain. You are given a piece of paper with your case no. on and it says that you have been accepted. On the way back you need to produce this at the border where you get another lecture and interrogation by very nasty border immigration officers.

BUT, after saying that, the advantages outweighed the disadvantages for us. We could then get our kids into school for free (otherwise it would have been $6500 for each child for half a year) and we were entitled to health care. In fact all of the advantages that you get with a work permit really, but still no pay!
