Re: VoIP recommendations for Canadian number?
I have voip with Ooma. It's a hardware device you connect to a router and it does forwarding or you can pick up the calls on an app installed on your smartphone. I believe it works even if the device is turned off. This might not work for you though.

Thanks for the suggestions both. Unfortunately Skype doesn’t have Canadian numbers yet. I found this in an old thread and might give this a go: https://www.aitelephone.com/callforw...istration.html |

You’re right, my laziness has been exposed - that’s where I found the one above :hysterical: I did try to delete this thread yesterday but couldn’t find a way to do it on my phone :yield: I'm sure others will come along with some alternative suggestions - though getting a phone that can take 2 Sim cards is very popular - depends how long you will need the 2nd phone number I think :) |
Re: VoIP recommendations for Canadian number?
I can recommend callcentric, I have both UK and Canadian numbers with them
Been using them for approx 9yrs ?? |
Re: VoIP recommendations for Canadian number?
If you know your way around VoIP, then look at voip.ms. Canadian company, but bills in USD (as does everybody). Reliable and low cost. Been using them for years. DIDs (incoming numbers) at $0.85 per month / $0.0090 per minute (+tax if in Canada). Termination (outgoing to UK landline) at $0.0070/min. So $0.0160/min to forward calls to a UK landline. Note that UK mobile terminations are expensive and you may be better off using a softphone like Zoiper if that's what you need. (Calls can also be routed to voice mail during certain hours and then forwarded to your email - useful due to the time difference).
PM me if you need help setting this up. Also check out VOIP Tech Chat forum | DSLReports, ISP Information for discussions and feedback of providers. Anveo and Callcentric are often recommended too, but I don't know my way around them. |
Re: VoIP recommendations for Canadian number?
You might want to take a look at Vonage. I've been with them for 14 years, at two different addresses. Excellent service, no issues at all. And they bill in Canadian dollars.

Re: VoIP recommendations for Canadian number?
voip.ms and Zoiper works beautifully for me, been using it for a few years now (my canadian 'mobile' is a voip.ms number routing through to Zoiper, phone is data-only on a Fido $15/month plan (3Gb which is more then enough for my purposes).
You could also buy a UK number from voip.ms so that UK people have a number they can call you on, which you can pick up via Zoiper on your regular mobile phone via data/wifi (and not have to spend $$ on UK roaming charges while still in Canada). |
