Whatever the economist decides - it's their survey and their metrics that are used. It's probably on their website somewhere. I believe size matters more now (no jokes please)
I tend to think it's bollocks for most people - but I can see why corporations use it to set compensation for people on international assignments. Still, the media's view is it's a great survey while Vancouver is winning!
2010 - Headline news - Vancouver is awesome!
2011 - Major news, but only reporting on how they should really be #1 cos that busy road isn't near vancouver.
2012 - silence..

Mr Lovato only examined 70 cities, rather than the 140 in the EIU's full ranking—he does have a day job after all—and in his efforts to choose the biggest and most geographically diverse places, he excluded the likes of Melbourne, Vancouver and Vienna, which occupy the top three slots in the main EIU table.

Metrics that excluded Vancouver so it is not surprising that it didn't win.

I don't think Vancouver can complain too much, they've done quite well out of this survey over the years. In fact, it's probably done more than expo and the olympics combined to give it whatever international reputation it has now. I know that whenever I told people I was moving here they all knew it was at the top of the liveability list, even if they knew nothing else about it.

Vancouver, Perth, brisbane etc are not liveable cities. Their cultural deserts, boring and a few shiny office buildings and a quarter acre plot in mindles suburbia does not make a great city. The best cities in the world are The New yorks, the Londons, The tokyos, The Sydneys, The berlins, romes, Madrids, Barcelonas, Paris, Moscows etc.
When it comes to liveability then north and central europena cities frankly win hands down. Integrated public transport, cycle lanes, charmong city centres, high density functional housing well serviced with great access to sports and shopping facilities. You can keep your vancouvers and melbournes not even close...

I helped set up a casino at the inter-tourist hotel in 1992. Lived out by the (no idea how to spell this) the keievsky vauxhall train station. My then GF and I were chased through red sqaure with a knutter with a knife, a toursit was murdered in the casino and no police attended.
I also worked at a second casino near the intertourist at the old polliat bureau building called the Alexander...that was robbed....actually just about 25 guys walked in, showed a gun, jumped over the tables and casually filled their bags with chips.
Still Gum Department store was nice as was red sqaure.....as i say never ever again.

Average pay is $120 per hour? Paid directly to the worker? How much do the employers charge on top of that?
Why are you still earning such a low wage when you could double up and retire much sooner?
By the way, we only have 2 bedrooms and I earn a ton more than you per hour. :

Lived in a 2 bed for many a year - great fun while I was young and single

It's a made up number imo. $120/hr is $240k per year (with 4 weeks holiday); maybe some very specialized jobs will get that - but there won't be many of those. I looked on craigslist and couldn't see anything more than $40/hr - admittedly I only sampled about half a dozen.

Sorry you have lost me. Good luck to you if thats what floats your boat. Obviouisly you are in the 1% and an attitude to match. I like what I do so why change Its not me complaining about what I earn its those not as fortunate - I am more than happy with my lot in life.

Just going off your openness about your earnings and number of bedrooms. I was merely commenting on my position in life and the need for 6 more bedrooms to find potential fulfillment. I'll need a good sized garden though.
I assumed your job pays on average $120 per hr elsewhere so it just made sense to me to get that and retire much quicker in a better financial position.
Do you have a cleaner or a roomba to help keep your house tidy?

As a bloke who lives in Van I have to say I love it, mainly because there are less canadians than other canadian citys!
The livability has always been over rated in my view, for some its perfect, plenty to do outdoors etc, but not everyone wants that! And the housing is getting silly, really think a crash will happen soon.
People are different and look for different things, life would be boring if we were all the same! Visit places and find where YOU want to call home, dont pick a home from a list!

No actually, boy d started emphasizing the comparison with Calgary, I was just comparing generally with various places if you look at my original post.
