Vancouver - what a dump (if TV drama is to be believed)
#1

My only experience of Vancouver is Da Vinci's Inquest, Intelligence and The Romeo Section.
If those excellent shows are anything to go by it's all back alleys and dumpsters, drug couriers on bikes and seedy bars and clubs.
What's it really like?

The Beach in Toronto is, of course, ultra-snob in a right athletic gear, premium stroller, kind of way.

My daughter who lives there, and who works at Hastings and Main in a trade closely connected with the illegal drug business, says it's lovely in a yummy mummy kind of way. "Like the Beach in Toronto but with an actual beach".

The only thing I'm frustrated with is sirens...they seem to be used for very little reason. Surely the flashing lights would suffice, as warning, unless a critical situation emerged.

It's not a dump but it's nothing special either!

Somebody the other day on a thread said that Vancouver itself is nothing special at all, but it's the surroundings that make it scenic, which I thought was spot on. Take away the mountains, ocean etc and it wouldn't be somewhere most would want to visit.

Have you been down Granville St lately? Half the shops are vacant the other half are pot shops or grimy bars or that seem to get their inspiration from the 1980s. It seems the mad condo building frenzy has sapped the energy from the commercial/consumer space. Yaletown is the only place that has nice places but its an area that is completely soulless.

Vancouver is a bit of a dump, but it's a 1000 times nicer than anywhere else in this country.

It depends on what you are looking for. There is so much to do in Vancouver, and it's very cosmopolitan, we really enjoy the huge variety of ethnic restaurants as well. Having been here almost 40 years, and having done a lot of travel all across the world, my opinion is that it is a great place to live and to visit.
