Stay south and you should be OK.

i lived in liverpool for 10 years (originally form the south) and can say that the north is a lovely friendly place with plenty of culture and a warmth that's lacking in the south.

the south is where the "culture" and the jobs are. it's that simple. northern working class towns tend to shrink fast and hard during recessions. i had to move back to london to find work and it's been a struggle even then.

The UK is an island 800 miles long with 65 million people on it. you can lose it in BC 4 times! too many people here fighting for too few jobs.

weather-wise, vancouver rain and the UK weather are a good match. just wait until we get a "hard winter" with a couple of inches of snow and the entire country falls apart and then call home to any friends you have in the flatlands back home :)

british transit is a mess. multiple companies operate rail, bus and coach travel. many routes in rural areas operate on a "whenever..." basis. arriva company bus drivers are racists who won't stop for ethnic minorities (just my opinion after many years suffering their services), branch lines on the rail network are basically services that run from A - B but twice a day will run out to A1 back to A and then on to B.

if you like it busy and bustling then head for london, manchester, birmingham (if you can put up with the accent!), cardiff and swansea in wales and maybe edinburgh or glasgow in scotland. if you like it a bit more peaceful and picturesque then you could help yourself to pretty much any other major town or small city.

we do have plenty of open space over here but it's not even close to the scale you're used to.

the UK: lots of people in a very very very small space.

I've lived here all my life and I'm looking to move to Van as soon as possible. i've just had enough... :)

I'll keep that in mind if I ever get homesick :)

Thank-you so much for this view, I still imagine its a lovely place (you probably have a lot of appreciation for it still :) ) even if youre tired of it as a place to live,
I didnt expect jobs would be easy, but then again. All I'm wanting is to be able try to pay the bills of living, my career can wait untill I return to my true home on VanCity :) <3 Xx

Re: Vancouver to the UK

you should be ok then, parts of london are pretty nice and reasonably affordable if you're willing to house-share. i'm paying about £460 per month in brixton which is in zone 2 with great transit links into the centre of london and beyond. if you shop about then it can be done on a budget. it only really gets expensive if you want your own place, have a family and need a big place or have little or no self restraint!

plenty of good world take outs, bargain stores and even though people moan about transport for london it's actually pretty impressive running 24 hour buses and a near 24 hour subway system. i will mis that level of connectedness when i get to van but that just means i'll finally have to learn to drive! :)

Yeah, our skytrains are pretty consistent. But when you miss your bus at night, you are pretty much out of luck in Vancouver (especially in the suburbs)

I hope you enjoy Vancouver. If you're a music fan (as I am) be sure to hit-up Granville st. Theres always concerts and fun stuff happening there, as well as an INCREDIBLE music store.
Also go down to the drive (commercial drive) in east van. I grew up on it. It's such a fun artsy place to go shopping at for all sorts of things <3 <3 :)

If someone told you they wanted to live in BC and experience the best the province had to offer would you recommend they go to Vancouver or Trail?

Livingwise I dont know about other places in BC, but I promise you wont be disappointed about Vancouver. Theres peaceful area, and bustling city, and the ocean, gorgeous parks, plenty to do. All around wonderful <3 :)

But if you are thinking vacation, then I would say the okanogan, or Kelowna <3 :)
Harrison Hotsprings is one of my favorite vacationing places (without leaving B.C.)

Hiya - I wondered if you might be able to help me too - I am from the UK (from the midlands (Nottingham) but lived in Manchester for the last 7 years - and love it)

I'm sorry if your many responces to your post have answered your question but can I just say on the Newbury thing it isn't a major city and you shouldn't consider Southampton either if it's big city you're after - if you're thinking south coast you want Plymouth or Bournmouth but must remember these are big Uni towns and quite seperate from London - Bristol is a brilliant place with a great buzz and good work/social environments. Brighton is a great option too - loads going on, kind of boho in feel. Nothing beats London though - you can get reasonable rents but food/drink are more expensive then the north and wages dont usually match the higher price of living. My move to Manchester was the best decision I made and I also work in Marketing and love it here - great night life and social stuff - always something going on - it's quite a hub to great music here. Good salaries too.

If you get a few minutes I am actually applying for a working visa to move to Canada and always fancied Vancouver but I've received some really blunt responces on here saying its basically a city full of perfect looking posers with nothing to do, super expensive and zero jobs. I'm gutted and hoping that isnt actually the case.

Good luck in your big decision
