Re: Vancouver or Ottawa?

Can't really add too much to what has already been said. Vancouver vs Ottawa is like comparing apples to oranges. Vancouver is a stunningly beautiful city but lacks a little soul. Outdoor pursuits abound. Vancouver is also well positioned to take advantage of the west coast of the US. Cheap flights from Belingham, WA - San Fran for round trip of around $100 for instance.

Yes winter is wet in Vancouver. About 4 months of crap weather is the norm. Although, summer, spring and autumn are beautiful. We've had an odd winter, very little rain and frigid temps and this odd white stuff called snow! As pointed out, however, rain is snow out of the city. I think you have to make your peace with the rain. I find that ifor about a couple of months of the year i start hating it and pine for warmer climes. I usually head to vegas (360 dolllars air fare and 3 nights 5 star hotel with tax and all fees). While i moan in the winter, I find it much, much better than Manchester's never ending year round drizzle. At least we get it over and done with. Plus the fact that you can drive 30 - 40 mins and ski in the best resorts in the world gives you a different outlook. I think rain is a state of mind. But if you absolutely can not stand rain, i wouldn't come.

One thing that is worth pointing out is the cost of living. Vancouver aint cheap anymore. Real estate is out of control, although i think rent is not bad in comparison. Rent for a one bed with an ocean view in a desirable area downtown can be had for about $1000 -$1200 with parking (you can of course pay a lot, lot more). Also, heat and hot water are included and a few even include cable. There is no such thing as council tax if you rent.

Canada, like the rest of the world, is in recession. Jobs are getting hard to find. A lot of people have had their hours cut etc. There is n't the range of jobs here as say. toronto. Few head quarters for companies and no real finance. Its all been hype around real estate and tourism.

I've only been to Ottawa once on business and it was f*****g cold!!!!!!!!!! You can tell who was from Vancouver - we were not dressed for the weather at all.

As already stated ensure you do you research.

Vancouver is beautiful, but I have found it vastly different living here, than just visiting. Depends on the industry you are in, but the quality & breadth of jobs available isn't great IMO. Salaries are poor too for the cost of living. For anyone moving to Canada, I would say a) research your job market b) get a job lined up !!

Good luck.

Spot on. I think this is why there appears to be fewer brits heading here than say Calgary or Edmonton.
