Others rave about the Acacia Fillo Bar, though I have yet to visit: http://www.acaciafillobar.com/ Hence my recommendation to consult reviews before blindingly choosing where to eat. Denman is, yes, a mixed bag.
Nook (And it's sister Tavola round the corner) is great, but it isn't exactly "cheap".

Good point. But now I'm curious, can the OP define "cheap" and "reasonably priced" with a proper dollar amount? I still believe that you don't have to spend a lot of money to get a good meal in Vancouver, at least compared to other cities. What we consider "average priced" might be more reasonably priced than you're expecting, depending on what you're expecting.

Especially if you stay away from the wine and cocktail lists.

That is one of the reasons that eating Asian food turns out to be good value. The best drink to accompany the food is tea and this is usually at no extra cost.

Tea is definitely a good choice, but surely it's not the best

Thanks to you all yet again, I'm taking copious notes!

Someone asked if we could it a dollar amount to 'cheap'. I guess it's hard to say on the spot but over here for a dinner meal in a gastro pub we'd consider £8-12 reasonable, verging on cheap. For that you'd get a gourmet burger or nice pasta etc. to be honest if we have to do pizza express type places for a while like when we were having some building work done. It's not a huge deal.

Speaking of gourmet burgers - check out Stackhouse on Granville, and Romers in Kits.

It’s symbolic of their cultural makeup. They seem to revel in mediocrity. Like Earls or the Cactus Club. The food is pretty ordinary; it’s over priced and has the atmosphere of a work canteen so they dress their staff up like strippers obviously to hide the glaring banality of the places. And stay away from Montana's. I had the misfortune of having to go there once, I still can't quite come to terms with the trauma.

No, you don't have to do pizza express for that price range. For £8-12 you can very well in Vancouver. One of my favourite restaurants within that budget range (for lunch):

http://theflyingpigvan.com/

I asked for a dollar amount because some of the results you were getting were bottom rung cheap (which isn't necessary inn Vancouver unless you're on a serious budget)
