New Glasgow, was once likened to the London borough of Richmond on this forum. I would guess the poll would be wrong, way wrong, as I wouldn't believe for a second our former poster could be.

I have driven through New Glasgow, seems a nice enough place, have no idea on its statistics but its not offensive in any way - like say Merthyr Tydfil

Amazing that I live near number 3. Kingston has Queen's University plus about 3 penitentiaries and you can't tell who belongs where !

If you click on the headings it lists the cities in order for that category.
Coming top for culture is Vancouver. Next is North Vancouver and Victoria - I assume that's an access/proximity thing going on.
No surprise to see Montreal, Toronto and Ottawa right up there too.
But separating the Vs and those three cities is Canmore, Alberta. No offence to anyone there, but why? I've Wiki'd and I can't see anything that stands out.

CULTURE: Bonus points – A city could receive up to 5 points based on the percentage of people employed in arts, culture, recreation and sports.
You might also get somewhere with a higher than normal percentage of people employed in those things, but most of the "users" are actually out of towners. That doesn't necessarily contribute to it being a good place to live.
It made me look at other parts. It's riddled with what are effectively duplicate categories or opposites. And oddities.
Walking/Cycling to work isn't really about cycle lanes, safety, ease of cycling etc it's about how many people actually do it.
One can argue there's a connection - they do it because there are cycle lanes for example. But the survey marks a city down for bad weather and because bad weather makes you less likely to cycle or walk, the city sort of loses double points.
Then again, not many walkers/cyclists could actually be down to a very good public transport system. That's a plus isn't it? Even more so when the buses are fitted with a rack for bikes enabling you to get somewhere for a more attractive bike ride in your leisure time.
A city gets ranking points for newer cars, but maybe there are fewer new cars about as people don't need them as much thanks to great public transport.
There's a point for each Hospital, Uni or College. So a city of 100k with one of each scores three points and a city of half a million with 3 of each scores 3 times as much even though its populace is less well served.
There are points relating to number of doctors per 1000 and points for % of people employed as health professionals. So a city with a lot of doctors scores well. And they might also do well on the health professionals score even though the reason might mainly be because of the doctors. They may not have any more of all the other health pros than another city yet they may get rated higher.
Can anyone tell I don't have anything better to do right now?

As I said, as surveys goes this one has one of the more usefull methodologies, but its not entirely foolproof I guess.
I figure a town where more people are buying new cars indicates a town where more people are confident of their long term job stability / income perhaps? Its an indicator of a healthy economy.
The culture thing is a bit odd, a place with little industry is going to have a higher proportion of arts/ creative jobs isnt it? Is that a good thing?
As far as biking goes the west coast would have a climate advantage I would think. Cycling in the Ontario or East Coast Winter wouldnt be high on my list of things to do.

This was the first winter I've been off my bike. There were longer periods of "much too cold" and a lot more ice around. I didn't want to chance it. Usually it snows, the streets are cleared and it's easy enough to cycle again.

All i know is that Edmonton, Reed Deer and Regina making the list tells me the relevance of the study. Seems it's more based on affordability and lack of over-crowding, areas where major cities are likely to fair less favourably.
As for climate, i guess it comes down to how you define it. Vancouver for instance, is certainly warmer in the winter, but is much more gloomier than some of the places on the list. By the same standard, other places can be sunny but oppressively humid in the summer. Bit subjective really. Victoria has one of the better climates with half of vancouvers notorious rain and likely amongst the sunniest in the summer months.
