Vacation allowance
 

Would people who have jobs already in Canada be willing to share what holiday allowance they receive? Did you have to negotiate to get more than the minimum two week allowance? Are employers fairly open to negotiating longer holiday time?

15 days standard - rises to 20 days when I've done 5 years service (already done 4 of these in the UK as it's a transfer) and then to 25 days when I've done 15 years service :eek:

I think the more your occupation is in demand , the more likely you are to get better paid vacation. OH got 4 weeks straight up , no negotiation. I got 4 weeks with minor negotiation, really because I am part-time. Both are occupations under pressure, mine actually more so than OH's I realise now.

I did 30 year with the same employer but I see in today's world that is a rarity.;)

6 weeks. Standard offer, no negotiation.

My previous job here offered 4 weeks.

35 days annual leave plus 11 days in lieu of working statutory holidays.:thumbsup:

Where I work it's 10 days for the first yr, then 15, and goes up to 20 after about 5yrs service. I managed to negotiate staight to 20 days, although 5 are kind of unofficial - I just have an agreement with my boss.

OH gets 20 days, she also had to negotiate but company were bending over backwards to hire her so it wasn't that hard.

I'm on 15, after previous service was taken into consideration when I rejoined my current employer.

Holiday allowance in the manufacturing sector seems a bit behind other fields.


I heard on the news recently that the average allowance across Canada is now 14 days paid leave, although on average only 11 is actually taken. Make what you will of those facts.

In the woodworking business two weeks (rising to three weeks after five years) is pretty standard.

I started off with 3 weeks (with minimal negotiation) and now it is four, albeit one week is over Christmas/New Year.

Mr YCD gets 10 days vacation per year plus 10 statutory days. After 5 years he will increase one day per year til he reaches 15 days + 10 stats.

I have just started a new job and get 2 weeks for my first year plus 11 statutory days. After 1 year I will go up to 3 weeks vacation days plus 11 stat.

Annual leave here seems to be worked on a percentage (I get 4%). I work part-time in my office job and casual as a support worker - both with the same organisation. The more hours I work, the more paid leave I will get :)

Are you sure you arent confusing what you are allowed to take with what you have paid into your holiday pay account and will actually be paid for....


There is a difference...its been discussed before. In general terms many employers take a percentage deduction (holiday pay) that they use to pay your wages when you take time off. What this means in practice is that if you decide to take two weeks off in the second month you have worked there, you will be lucky to get paid a couple of days wages for the time, as that is all the money they have in your holiday pay account. Generally this only applies to those paid hourly rather than on salary, although Ive been salaried and had this happen to me too. What it could mean, if you work enough hours, is that you could have enough holiday pay paid to cover three weeks, but your boss will still only let you take two. The other extreme is more likely, you can take two weeks off, but only get paid for one of them.

This is probably one of the reasons for the discrepancy between the number of days the average canadian is entitled to, and the number of days they actually take. If you take the days off early in your salary year, you might not get paid for all of them, so you decide to wait, but then end up not taking them anyway! Something to be aware of for newcommers. Some employers allow you to bank the holiday pay and carry it over to the next year, but some dont...they pay it out at the end of the year, and then you are in the same boat the next year.

Another side effect of "holiday pay" schemes like this is that when you finally do reach an extra weeks vacation allowance for time served, your take home pay goes down as the percentage deduction to cover the holiday pay for the extra week increases!
