Re: UNIVERSITY APPLICATIONS
Hi there,
Have you looked at the University of Calgary website yet? The problem will be that you must have been a resident in Alberta for 12 months before the course starts in order to qualify for 'permanent resident' course fees. If you cannot meet this requirement then you will have to pay 'international' fees which, when we looked for our son, were approx $18,000 for the first year (3 times the standard fees) of a degree course. When we move and wherever we move to, we intend to let our son do year 13 of high school to gain his high school graduation, regardless of what A levels he gets. This will mean he will have to wait a year before starting his degree but it will avoid paying 3/4 of the cost of a full degree just for the one year of study. It will also enable him to make a few friends in the area we settle, albeit friends who will be a year younger than himself. |

My son was accepted to University of Calgary in 2005 and was going to be charged PR rates and we certainly did not have 12months residence. It was only the student loans etc that specified a 12 month residence. (However it may have changed.) It was the same for the Ontario universities that he applied for. He applied before we landed and simply sent copies of landing documentation to the universities after we landed to show change of status. He went to Guelph for a term and we paid Canadian student rates, not international rates.
Thanks:) |

HELP:unsure: All the info you need will be on the individual university's websites. Each university may do thing a bit differently and/or have different requirements, so consult each one and don't assume one standard fits all. On the websites you will usually find a "prospective students" link... that's where you'll find a lot of info. http://www.ualberta.ca/ http://www.ucalgary.ca/ http://www.uleth.ca/ http://www.athabascau.ca/ There is no grade 13 in Alberta... education varies a lot in Canada. |
Re: UNIVERSITY APPLICATIONS
Hi again,
I emailed the University of Calgary about this very issue in March but for the life of me I cannot find the response that mentioned the 12 month residency ruling. I did however find one of their earlier replies that said the deadline for domestic applications for Fall 2008 admissions would be April 1st 2008. A helpline number was also included in the email, this being (403) 210-7625 Never did ring the helpline as the email that followed seemed to answer the question. If UofC is one of the places your daughter is considering, it might be worth you giving them a call. We may no longer be heading to Calgary so the point about grade 13 is taken, should have said last year of high school instead. Hope you manage to get this clarified for your daughter quickly as getting the kids settled and happy is one of the most important factors in a successful relocation. John |
