Default Unemployment Benefits for New Immigrants?

Are New Immigrants allowed any kind of social benefits when they arrive in canada and looking for employment?

I just want to know what a newcomer is entitled to?

There is social assistance at both the federal and provinical level. I'm sure you can get something from them. It'll help if you've got a bad back or limp. But here is the Ontario eligibility estimator, which might be of help. Good luck though.

as I said on the other thread, bad backs aren't any good any more for getting benefits. Best bet is some made up mental problem like 'stress' or 'depression', at least that way if they take a picture of you enjoying your holiday they can't say you're faking it.

Its easy to mock when you're on Easy Street but no fooling, when a fella is down on his luck, he deserves a break from the man. He just wants the chance to get three squares and a bit pride back.

I think it's appalling that new immigrants cannot go straight onto benefits. All those hardworking Canadians should be thankful they want to come here and pleased to work to keep them. Almost wrote to my MP!

Christ.

You are "entitled" to absolutely nothing. You may be "eligible", but it is highly unlikely, as someone else mentioned, this is exactly what your settlement funds are for.

If you think about it, benefits come from the pool that every working person pays into. If you've never worked, you haven't contributed to it, so why would you get anything from it?

I'm presuming that you are referring to some sort of "job seeker's allowance". You might be eligible for child benefits, etc. but this has nothing to do with employment.

Yes, if you claim refugee status, you get more than regular EI.
