Default UK provisional license in Ontario

I know I can exchange my UK license for an Ontario one but if my son has a provisional license will they exchange it for a G1, G2 or nothing ?

Cheers

A provisional is an L license, so nothing to exchange. You also have to have held a license for 2 years for an exchange, so he would have to start over.

The latter part is not the whole story, in Ontario, if you have held a full UK licence for less than 2 years you will get a G2 licence and once you have two years experience you can take the road test to get full licence (G licence).

But a provisional UK license is not a full license, is it?

No it is not, but it was the latter statement that I was trying to provide other readers the full facts. The provisional licence holder would start from stratch here.

The other thing to consider when deciding if to take a UK test or wait till they have emigrated is that if they only pass a test in Canada and returns to UK in the future they wont be entitled to a full licence. The DVLA will give a limited licence allowing them to only drive an Automatic until they take a road test in a manual.

Is it possible to take a test in Canada using a manual, and then be able to get the full licence when you return to the UK? Just curious.

There is no differentiation in Canada as far as the license is concerned, nothing to say you took it on a standard or automatic.
