I think it had something to do with the employees not being able to speak French with them being in Ottawa. This may just be a rumour though ;)

Kinda begs the question how many "front line" staff helping British people would need french?

You apply through the US embassy in the US now.

It was done to consolidate things as the UK government sought to save money.

It's super expensive to renew via the US too.

Depending on long term plans it might be worth renewing in the UK before going. The wasted three years may be less of a loss than the extra cost involved in US renewal.

I recently renewed my UK passport and as BristolUK states it is expensive - $244 compared to £72.50 if done in the UK.

In hindsight I would have renewed it (or say I've lost it) whilst still in the UK and before I got here.

Just note that if you're coming on a TWP the length of your permit won't go beyond the length of your passport.

This is what my partner did. Although we didn't need to say that he lost it. There was just over 1 year left on his passport and I just said he was moving to Canada and wanted a new one. No problems. Issued within a day.
