UK Paramedic
 

Hello everyone I'm just curious if anyone knows if UK paramedics are eligible to practice in Canada? Or could someone point me in the right direction, thanks in advance :)

The different provinces will require different proof of education from you, and/or require you take some equivalency exams.

Here is the link the Alberta College of Paramedics to get you started, as it's the only one I know a little about. Once you've had a hunt around the website, come back to me if you have any questions about the EMR, EMT and EMT-P training cycle.

One thing for Alberta (unless it's changed very recently) is that they are not lacking in local candidates for jobs, so unless you have some specialist skills (CBRN comes to mind), I suspect this is not a field you can just easily walk into as an overseas candidate. Be prepared to jump those hoops! :)

I can tell you that BC is looking for Paramedics to hire right now! I work for BC Ambulance Service as a primary care paramedic, depending on your current level you can likely apply to transfer your license here.

Paramedic licensing differs from province to province in BC. You can find links to the various licensing requirements by way of the Paramedic Association of Canada website. You can easily apply for licensing in Canada if you have UK training. We have several UK paramedics in BC.

I would would stay right away from the BC Ambulance ; it is a terrible working environment and you are required to endure years of miserable part-time existence before you have any hope of getting a full time job. However you do not need to work for the BC Ambulance Service to have a BC License. There is an extreme shortage of true Paramedics (called Advanced Care paramedics in BC, not simply primary care "paramedics" that are really only basic life support) in private industry.

The pay in private industry is more than double that of the ambulance service with far better employers. There is no need to live in Canada's most expensive and non-affordable housing market, as it is customary for paramedics to be flown to and from their work sites and homes as part of their employment. Virtually all full time ambulance service employees have to start in Vancouver. It is a horrible system.

Hi ego masseur sorry to cut in on someone elses topic but seemed daft to start a new on for the same thing. I am also a UK HCPC Paramedic looking to live and work in canada. Any advice you can give on moving to and working in BC would be very much appreciated. I dont mind if its ambulance service or private work thats available. I cant PM you yet as I dont have enough posts
