Well done Canada. Thats much better than the GBs 1. I asked my husband how long he thought it would take living of in Canada before he started supporting Canada before GB. He didn't know.

I'm just looking forward to the commonwealth games in a few weeks. Does anyone know if GB have some good medal hopes?

The four component parts of the United Kingdom (England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland) compete separately at the Commonwealth Games, so there are no "GB" participants, strictly speaking.

And at the Olympic Games it's a United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland team. Some British territories, such as Bermuda, do compete separately at the Olympics.

Great thread claire. Its important to celebrate Canada's victories, especially since MOST of the gold medals were won by women!

Congratulations Canadas' athletes on a job very very well done!

Unclear whether this is genuine or not, but when a country doesn't have a climate for winter sports (which Britain doesn't have, except maybe in parts of the Scottish Highlands) then to win *any* medal at the Winter Olympics is a creditable performance.

Perhaps Britain should take a leaf out of Australia's book and persuade a few Russians, Canadians and Austrians to switch allegiance?

And the Netherlands got 9 medals, hardly the wintersports capital of Europe...

Medal count last two Olympics (Winter and Summer)

Gold: GB (9), Canada (10)
Silver: GB (10), Canada (16)
Bronze: GB (12), Canada (10)

Total: GB (31), Canada (36)

Canada has half the population of GB.

Many of the Canadian winter medals are as a direct result of the Olympics being in Calgary in 1988 (speed skating and xc skiing). Let's hope 2010 and 2012 Olympics do the same for Canada (again) and GB respectively.

All of them in speed skating. The Dutch are big on skating.

I know where you're coming from (and am very pleased we did so well) but the same argument would suggest that Canada did rather poorly compared with, say, Austria, Norway, Sweden and Switzerland.
