I have been to Canada a few times and even though we are hoping to up sticks and go, I am slightly concerned about their dire TV.

Some property listings say satelite included. Does anyboby know what this is? I know what cable is but will we get any english/sky chanels? is

I have to unfortunately ;) be a lady of leisure for a few months and as much as I should spent the time being Mary Poppins to my children , decent TV is high priority !!

Isn't there a "black box" thry came out with now where they say you can receive any TV fro many-where in the world?

I would have thought with Broadband and Sat. TV should not be a problem now.

I am obviously thinking about visitors;)

I will be too busy skiing, mountain bike riding , swimming and bear hunting, god I am exhausted thinking about it !

I am now considering staying and working 9-5

Simply put:

Cable or Satellite will give you a myriad of mainly US channels. You can get BBC World & BBC Canada as part of these. Everything apart from PBS will be interrupted frequently (more frequently as a program goes on) for adverts. CBC don't have enough adverts so show the same ones back to back which is very irritating. A PVR will enable you at least to record a show and fast forward the ads.

SKY can't be got here. The satellites don't cover the US. There is no way around this no matter how big a dish you get.

There is a device called a 'slingbox' (google it for details) which you could leave with someone in UK and use to transmit UK tv via the net to you. How practical a solution this is I dunno.

You can get programs through bit-torrent filesharing sites such as www.uknova.com Also Youtube seems to have lots of Top Gear on it. There are other sites such as www.liveuk.tv which pupport to offer live steaming BBC1/2/ITV/C4 over the net. No idea how well this works. Suspect it is illegal so may not be around for ever. Different TV is a factor of moving to a different country. Suggest you tell your visitors to embrace it and not worry about it!

We've given up on satellites and cables and slingbacks and all of that. We get a good picture on a half dozen English language stations using rabbit ears (NBC ABC CBS PBS CBC CTV) and have a subscription to zip.ca
