The truth about winter in Canada.

For all of you who long to experience real seasons or think it won't be too bad for you as you don't mind a bit of snow. This is the reality unless you live on the west coast. Day after day after day.

I genuinely enjoy winter. Along with autumn. Far better than that rubbish in spring and summer.

We had lots of snow today, along with driving winds. Not fun.

Yesterday was lovely - today is frikkin' rubbish again.

Ice storm in December - photo of my friend's tree.

Calgary has been fine for me this year no problems, 2 or 3 really cold spells but 3/4 chinooks that have come in.

I shoveled a good 6" off our laneway today only to find that the roads were too yucky to drive to my midwife appointment anyway. At least the snow fills in the potholes...

My family think I should move to Ontario instead of BC. Explaining to them the difference between 13C and sunny, or -13C and still dropping snow... :D

You didn't want your car to get dirty, or you are unable to drive confidently in winter conditions?

This is what it was like today.

Well it's our first winter, and so far it's been ok. But it's March and I want the snow to go. I want daffodils and green.

Thankfully we came up from Niagara yesterday and not today:thumbsup:

I see all this and it makes me want to go out there sooner. What's wrong with me?

Couldn't care less if the car gets dirty. The roads from here to where I needed to get to were not safe to drive today. A lot of it is open farmland and visibility is a huge problem when there's blowing snow. They've even closed it a few times this year, which I've not known them to do before. Reports from friends who had travelled the route today saying it was taking over 3 times as long to get home, numerous collisions and cars being towed out of the ditch etc. changed my mind. So no, I'm not stupid (I don't see that as confidence) enough to drive in that, heavily pregnant and with 2 young children in the back, when I can simply rearrange the appointment. Most of that would have been caused by people driving badly, but if you come across enough of those, how you drive in the conditions often becomes irrelevant.

We still went out, just not there, we stayed closer to home. Mostly the roads around here weren't too bad once you got off the side streets.

There's nothing wrong with you. You have that egotistical vision of embracing the harsh conditions because you can do it, coupled with a misunderstanding how the cold will really feel. Have a lovely time.

I would take the BC southern interior weather over the west coast weather any day. Too much rain on the coast. The BC southern interior climate is the best anywhere in Canada hands down. Winter has ended, the snow has gone and it's warm already plus it's dry. Living on the tip of Canada's only desert has it's advantages.
