Not something you can do in Calgary ... maple trees don't survive in our flaky climate.

Come on now, I lived in Kitchener-Waterloo, and it gets damn cold....all you need is a few maple trees.

And no, I haven't tried marmite (not being of Scottish descent), but if I ever feel the need to throw up....I will certainly keep it in mind..... :p

It's not the cold that kills them, it's the chinooks ... some species wake too easilly from dormancy ... they think it's spring when it's only a chinook :(

Like I've told you before, you have ten perfectly good fingers if you feel the need to throw up :p

Too chicken to try a new experience??

That makes more sense, but I'm still with maple syrup.

Unless the other choice is ice cream & chocolate sauce

We got the same type of weather in KW. One xmas is was warmer there then in Victoria.........try it sometime.....remember change keeps you young at heart..

If I want to experience something I'd try a Cadbury hazelnut choco bar over marmite any time..... :p

I'm just reporting what I've been told ... I'm on my second (or is that third?) attempt at growing grape vines in Calgary ... you see them in SW Ontario ... do they survive chinooks ... let's just say they haven't so far ...

You can count a Cadbury's hazelnut chocolate bar as a "new experience" ... not unless you dip it in tempura batter and deep fry it :p

maple syrup is good, but it is not a patch on treacle.
I'm much more inclined towards lemon juice and sugar

English style pancakes aren't anything like proper buttermilk pancakes ... lemon juice and sugar covers up the taste :p

Oh I've tried maple syrup on pancakes, we've got about a gallon of the stuff at home.... but you should try lemonjuice and sugar, so good.

I think she means golden syrup rather than treacle.... 2 very different things, golden syrup is sooooooo good!!! but I don't think you can get it in the states.

Re: Treacle or Maple Syrup????

I'm a maple syrup girl!! I had no idea that "Golden Syrup" even existed until I moved to Australia and attempted to find maple syrup. THERE IS NONE!! It's all golden syrup!

I finally found a bottle or "Real Canadian Maple Syrup" in the imported foods section of David Jones BUT it was $13.00 a bottle for HALF what $2.99 will buy you in Canada.

Devestation ensued....

One of my charming friends got me a bottle for my birthday and I've been using it very sparingly to savour the experience.

Best pancakes... make 'em THIN like crepes, roll up warmed banana slices in the pancake, drizzle maple syrup and a dollop of cream if you like.

*drool drool*

Hi Willmore

Have you tapped your own trees?
We've got a few Maples around our house and have been told we could get a gallon or so.

Is it easy?
Do you know where to buy the equipment?

Thanks

Sean

Yes we did when I was growing up in the KW area. From what I remember it wasn't hard, but very slow - it had to be boiled for hours....and didn't get much for all the effort - but it was worth it.

All you need is a pail, plug and tap which my parents tell me you can just buy in any hardware store. In the KW area, we did it in March when the sap was running.

You do know that they have to be "sugar" maple trees right to get the syrup? :p

Good luck and let me know how it works out

Well, I really and truly hate to admit this, but was curious about marmite, so asked my mom. Apparently they ate it on toast all the time in Ireland and even after they came to Canada........unbelieveable......

They make Marmite where I grew up..... what it is, is the scrapings of the inside of the giant beer barrels they make bass in after it has been brewed..... yum.

As for birds custard, I haven't even seen custard yet here :(

Golden Syrup or Maple Syrup......

Sharmagirl

No argument there, it's got to be golden syrup. Found some in Zehrs. Failing that you can always go for the lemon juice and sugar option.

I'd even go as far as eating them plain before having maple syrup.
