Travel to US with limited time left on passport
Hi
Just wanted to check something. We are planning a trip to the US in August. We are all still on British passports.
Our son's passport runs out March 2016 and from what I am reading online it seems that you don't need 12 months or 6 months left on your passport as long as it's valid for when you leave the US.
We all have PR cards.
Is this right people?
Thanks

Your passport only needs to be valid for the proposed duration of your stay. If you're planning to travel under the VWP then you'll be fine.

The rules on passport validity depend on the country that you are visiting. As has already been mentioned, the passport just needs to be valid for the duration of the trip when visiting the US on a UK passport. However, the restriction also depends on the passport you are travelling on. The US does impose passport validity rules on some foreign passports. More info here:
Six Months Passport Validity Rule for entering the U.S. on non-immigrant visa
As you can see, UK passport holders are among those who are exempt from the 6 month rule.

Actually on this topic, according to 8 CFR 212.1(a), this requirement for the travel document to be valid throughout the stay doesn't apply to Canadians with NEXUS/FAST/SENTRI cards or EDL/EICs.
Just a tip. Another good reason to get one.
Also, a Canadian PR can enter the US without a passport, if they get a visa, another thing I didn't know until I read the CFR. Because obviously some people can't get passports from their home countries for whatever reason.
So if you had a British passport that was close to expiry, you could theoretically apply for a B-1/2 visa as a Canadian PR, which might be faster.
Never heard of anyone doing it, but 22 CFR 41.3(f) specifically says you can.
