I am British by birth but also Irish because my parents are Irish citizens. To get my Irish citizenship I would need to apply for it. Just assumed it would be the same in Canada.

Do you mean you would need to apply for your Irish passport? A lot of people confuse applying for a passport with applying for citizenship. The only people who have to apply for citizenship are those who aren't already citizens by birth. An example is an immigrant applying to be naturalised as a citizen of their new country/nation.

It depends on the country and citizenship rules. In this case, the OP's granddaughter has been a citizen since birth, they don't need to apply for it.

Incidentally, I don't think you need to apply for Irish citizenship either if a parent was born there, and would simply apply for a passport if you wanted one - but I'm not sure so don't quote me on that!

I am actually in the process, I initially thought I could just get a passport but if your not born on the island of Ireland you first have to apply to the register of foreign births. I assume you end up with some sort of certificate which you can then use for your passport application. I put the application in arround February and still haven't heard a thing which is not surprising given first brexit and now corvid.

Yes not a good time to be waiting for official documents, I hope the backlog's cleared soon and you hear something back. Passport applications are particularly 'picky' in terms of providing proof that you're a citizen but you should be right once you've got what you need from the Register.

Thanks to all for the responses to my original question and obviously the subject has expanded and hit some important issues. My granddaughter and her mum have now returned to the UK and are back into UK quarantine. I will forward the link for their perusal.
