Travel insurance for elderly parents to visit
 

Hi,

Moved to Canada on a two year TWP. I've been looking in to the possibility of arranging for my parents to visit. Both of them have chronic health conditions (fairly complex needs for my dad).

I've been looking into travel insurance and I've been struggling to find anyone who will cover them to come here on holiday. I was wondering if anyone else has had a similar experience with getting elderly or unwell parent over from UK. If so, any good insurance companies you would recommend?

They could manage the flight. They keep well on a day to day basis but they need cover for any 'episodes' of their respective conditions. Too risky to travel without insurance.

I'm really hoping I can find a solution. They are gutted at the thought of not coming over (as am I :unsure::unsure::unsure:)

I hope you find a solution.

My Mum was 83 when she came over for six months. But I can't remember who she was covered with. If I can dig in to my emails and find I'll let you know. That was in2011 though.

We used Staysure for our last trip to Canada and US. They covered my wifes exisitng conditions - heart problems, diabetes, arthritis - but at a cost! I think it was something like £600 for 3 weeks. We've also used them when we used to visit here for 6 weeeks at a time before we emigrated and it was, pro rata, a lot cheaper than US coverage!

As quiltman said. Staysure advertise on TV in the UK and seem to specialise in older travellers with health problems - for a price of course!

Better to pay the price though. My Mum had a stroke while she was with us!

My MIL came to see us up until she was 90+ She (and my mother) both used Saga Travel Insurance for Over 50s - Travel Insurance - Saga for their insurance.

Looking for my Dad to visit - He's 82 and had some heart issues back in 2009 /10

It's looking impossible / 30 days cover 1900 GBP

We're in the same position, unfortunately. They were quoted £3000 for the two of them. Feeling rather gutted.

This is who my Mum used. She was 83 and had high blood pressure. Can't remember if she had anything else but she was on a whole bunch of tablets.
The premium was around £600 for six months. That was in 2011...

When my Mother (mid 90s, catalogue of existing conditions) came over a couple of years ago I obtained several quotes from Canadian companies, Manulife being one provider. She turned them down because she got cheaper coverage from a UK company. I'll ask which one but that won't be until mid-week.

Sorry to hear of the cost! It's because you need north america cover, plus their ages, plus their conditions. In all , a high risk for an insurance company especially with the cost of hospitalization in Canada.
All I can suggest is to try every company specialising in older folks travel insurance. Otherwise you have to decide whether the cost is worth it for your folks get to see you, maybe for the last time - gloomy I know, but we have to think of these things regretfully. I see you are on a TWP so do you intend returning to UK when it runs out or are you looking to stay? That may help with your decision. One of the reasons we decided to emigrate here was because both our sons live here and as we are getting older, the cost of insurance would just keep going up , plus my wifes arthritis was making it more difficult to travel so we would rarely see them or our grandchildren.:(
Oh, and when you reach 80 premiums tend to at least double!

We're here with an open mind about staying if we get the chance- jobs and feeling settled will all be taken into account. We're a 'blended' UK/EU family and currently unsure of how the whole Brexit debate will effect our ability to return when the time comes. So, just watching things from a far and enjoying getting to know this little bit of Canada we find ourselves in for now! Leaving behind aging parents is certainly the hardest part, made harder with the thought they are unlikely to be able to come over.

It took a while to find out but the company was Saga.

Have you contacted Insubuy? They are based in the US and specialize in insurance for elderly parents visiting their family.

New poster. 2 posts. One in the Canada forum, one in the Australian forum. Both recommending a US based insurance company. You'd have to forgive people for thinking you have a particular agenda in joining BE :sneaky:
