It certainly is that. Much of it makes me think of Las Vegas (not that I've been there) but it's all far enough away from the Falls themselves not to spoil them.

Atlantic City more than Vegas. Very little of Vegas is run down and it's not sleazy, horrible perhaps, but cleanly horrible.

I took the train and a cab to the falls once long ago but it was the same price as a rental car and more restrictive.

We thought it was more like Margate... and the falls themselves were quite disappointing. But it was in April, so there was a lot of snow around the falls and the Maid wasn't running. I prefer my natural wonders in a more beautiful setting

It's a shame one has to see the other stuff to get down to the Falls, but to be fair, it's like another world when when you're away from the gaudiness.

Well my idea of a beautiful setting doesn't really involve buildings. It's not the gaudiness of the tat, more that the falls seem diminished by the buildings around them. I thought they ought to be awesome, but found that they weren't. Possibly just the time of year. The drive to Niagara-on-the-lake was beautiful though.

I've only been in Summer, gorgeous weather all three times. I have seen footage of it in winter.

I really enjoyed it in 1975 - I remember few buildings other than a waxworks.

In 2004 I had the pleasure of the look on my new wife's face when I took her (to the falls!!) and then again in 2007 when the kids came with us.

Hi Zoe
I went there by Via Rail in December 2002 whilst on holiday, which was a pleasant enough journey and then walked through thick snow to the falls. I think the walk took less than an hour but I stopped several times to take photos as I loved the look of the houses dressed up for Christmas and the river. Niagara itself was a little tacky but as I love tacky souvenirs that was fine by me. The only thing about the train was the return time as I would have liked to have seen the lights over the falls. I also drove there a few years later via Niagara on the Lake and the drive from there to the falls was gorgeous and I could leave when I was ready.
If you don't want to drive though then the train is definately doable. Have a good journey,
Diefenbaker

I've not done the Toronto-Niagara train thing, but once in Niagara I'd recommend getting a day pass on the People Mover to get around. I'm pretty sure there's a stop at or very near the station (Bridge St/River Rd), and they run about every 20 minutes to major attractions around the place. Ticket also includes the funicular railway to get up to the upper level near the Fallsview Casino.
