I can't directly answer your question but I spoke to a chap a couple of days ago (british) who told me that there is something (store?restaurant?) on 32nd street/avenue which sells curry sauces which are very british in flavour/texture. I don't know what it is or is called but if anyone else knows?? He just said that the tikka marsala sauce was a bit hot but apart from that they were excellent.

Anyone out there know? If not he'll be returning to Swift Current in a few weeks and said he would let me know more details then.

I don't know what a curry house is. I think it's what Calgarians might call an East Indian restaurant. There are a few I like:

  • Rajdoot. It's on 4th Street SW, just north of the Elbow River, which is in the close-in southwest part of the city.
  • Maurya. It's in Kensington, a close-in neighbourhood that's across the Bow River from downtown.
  • Bombay House. This place is a bargain. It's on Centre Street, close to the train tracks on 7th Avenue SW in the downtown core. It's in an unprepossessing building. However, don't let that put you off. It serves a tasty and reasonably priced lunch buffet.
  • Taj Mahal. It's on Macleod Trail South. It's okay, but for some reason I don't like it as much as the others I've mentioned.

There are other East Indian restaurants in Calgary. If/when you settle here, just look in the Yellow Pages to find one that is near you.

Hi if your looking for a good curry house in Calgary a must try is Glory of India http://www.gloryofindia.com/, if your in the need of spices and curry mixes you also need to visit Calgary SpiceLand #130, 1830 - 52nd Street S.E. this place is great any spice you need and really great prices, and right around the corner from there is another great curry house called starlight, and in midnapore there is a new place called The Copper Kettle, its very good. as well next week there is Taste of Calgary it returns to the Festival Market @ Eau Claire August 4 - 7 with sensational samples from Calgary’s finest and most unique restaurants and beverage companies. http://www.atasteofcalgary.com/taste_of_calgary.htm

hope this helps

Brian

Just in case you end up being a little dissapointed can I recommend you have a look for author Pat Chapman on amazon. He has a recipie book for very engligh curries and the recipies really work. Take it, and some UK measuring spoons with you (you'll need them). Not expensive but worth it!

Joehat, i respect your recipe, however, i believe in cooking a curry the north indian way, ie, make the perfect masala first, then add the meat ...

We ate at Maurya in Kensington the most.

Rajdoot I never liked -- slooooooow service, poor food. Same with that fancyish one on 14th Ave. Taj Mahal gets "A" for effort with the decor. Food is so-so.
