Toronto moving rip off

My son moved apartments today.
He booked a two men and van off kijiji and was quoted something like $47 an hour.
He was expecting to pay something like $300.
They loaded his belongings into the van and then told him it would cost $1000!!!
He said no way that was not what they agreed and they said they would take his stuff if he refused.
They were big and intimidating. He spoke to the "boss" over the phone and had to agree to $600!
They moved his stuff to the new place and he had to pay them.

When we spoke to him this evening (knowing none of this) he was really upset and angry.

Its like extortion or demanding money with menaces.

We told him he should report this company to the police and kijiji.
I don't think he will get money back, but people like this need to be put out of business.

Sorry to hear of your son's experience.

Have your son check out the 'help' section of Kijiji. There is a part that says you can report an ad, however it does say that if you are defrauded kijiji can't intervene and your only comeback is to go to the police (which I don't think they'll do very much since your son probably didn't have a 'contact' of any sort with the 'removal' company.)

Best thing is to learn from the mistake and next time use a legitimate company or have the agreement put down on paper.

He was told by his dad that he should get evetything in writing and talk to several different companies yada yada, but he just picked one out of a hat as it were and expected it all to be alright.
I must admit I was shocked by it, but having looked into it online I find it is almost standard practice! or at least not at all unsual.
He reported it to police and to kijiji (who I think removed the ad).
He doesn't expect anything to come of it, but the more people that report this kind of extortion the more likely it is to get dealt with.

And yes he is putting it down to experience:(

Should look on the bright side - had he used a reputable company it would have probably cost more than $600 anyway.....
