Toronto here we come.......??

Hi everyone,

I have been offered a job in Toronto (North York) through my current employer and am in process of collating all documents for visa application. My husband and 2 kids (5 and 2) are coming with me and I would really appreciate your thoughts on where to live etc, schools and that sort of thing. We are going out next week for a look and see trip and to meet my new employers - any advice you could all gice me would be great!!

Wish me Luck

Avoid the 'steeped tea' at Tim Hortons - stewed sewage. :D

Good luck and have fun.

You may want to consider living outside of the city and commuting in as parts of Toronto can now be quite dangerous, which in fact has caused a fairly large exodus to the burbs. I live about sixty clicks east of Toronto and have seen a dramatic increase in population in the last few years. A lot of my friends and neighbors work in Toronto and use the GO trains and buses, which compared to the U.K. is clean and reliable. It might be better if you rent to start with it will give you a chance to take your time and have a good look around. While you are looking pop into East Side Marios by the skydome they do a fairly good pint in there and try the linguini with mussels.

come west to oakville/burlington. 1/2 hour by train to the city
407 takes 1/2 hour too

a little more expensive than the east, but you`ll see why when you visit;)

Hi everyone and thanks for all your posts (although I missed most of them as I was on my scouting trip-lol). It looks as if we will be re-considering whether or not this is the right move for us. Naive as we probably were, we just didn't find what we were looking for - (currently have , rolling fields, cows in summer and stunning views at present) we really struggled to find that in an 'affordable' area. Much as I understand that commuting is a part of life, I don't want to spend hours on a train after 10 hour shifts and I was not convinced that the pro's weigh out the cons.
To be honest, we are pretty devasted that it was not all we expected it to be but we are going to sit on it for a few weeks and then decide with clear heads. Any thoughts from anyone would be very welcome. - thanks :(

Hi, I'm sorry things didn't pan out the way you expected. You dont say what it is you do, job wise, I would think it's something in demand, and you mentioned ten hour shifts so I'm guessing a nurse maybe ? If that is so why does it have to be Toronto ? You could expand your search to anywhere in Ontario or Canada for that matter where you could live in a rural enviroment and still be a reasonable distance from your work. It would be such a shame to give up after coming so close. Why dont you tell us in more detail what it is you do and what you want and I know the people on this web site will do all they can to help. So keep your pecker up ( you get thrown in jail for saying that here ) and dont give up. All the best to you all.

Hi, this is my first post, thought I'd take the plunge :)
I was in Toronto for much of 2005 and its a great city and we really enjoyed ourselves there although being pregnant and very tired at the time, we didn't travel much out of the city (actually not far at all, only as far the beaches area), and being a country girl myself I really missed the countryside. At the moment we are in downtown Vancouver with the beach to our left and the snow tipped mountains straight ahead, its a really nice blend of city and country. Perhaps commuting time (from city to amazing views) would be much shorter here?? ...I've only been here 3 weeks though so I dont really know, but so far I enjoy the blend of country, city and beach. Sorry I don't know much about areas outside of the city to look at or comparable house costs to Toronto, but maybe worth taking a look if your still interested in Canada and your after the big city for work.
One thing I do now know about Vancouver, I should have packed my wellies and a rain coat :)

Which parts of Toronto are so dangerous as to have caused people to move to the 'burbs?

I doubt there's been white flight from Jane and Finch in a generation and, in any case, that's already a 'burb. I wondered about tent city, I know people got bulldozed out of there like it was the west bank, but I don't know that they went to Whitby.
