I am preparing myself for my mother to visit next May. My husband is already getting worked up and I have already told the boys they have to be nice grandsons for three weeks!

When she came 4 years ago with my dad I insisted they hired a car so they could go off by themselves. They hated calgary/alberta/BC/Canada and even came back early from BC!!

I can cope with my mother by myself, so I am going to take her away for a day or two each week to give everyone a break. It will cost me a fortune in gas and overnight hotels, but when my husband divorces me it cos of my mother will probably cost me more

We're open enough with her that any little irritating habits or issues that inevitably occur, we tell her straight up. She has to just accept ours

Sounds like a great MIL. There are some of those around. Mine will be, once I've finished her training.

Watch a Porno movie while she's in the room - she'll leave soon enough

Being a mother -in -law myself and planning to go for a 4 week visit to Canada in the New Year what ground rules should I be sticking to do you reckon? I have visited a good few times in the past but would like to know what are definite no no s for a visiting mother-in-law.
I do get on great with my daughter and her hubby but it is good to know what irritates other son/daughter -in-laws.

Not saying what you really want to do when asked, or if you are asked what you want to eat, or watch on TV, etc etc. My mum tries hard but when she won't make a decision in case it the wrong one it's trying. It means we have to guess all the time, and usually it's wrong. Its stressful making all the decisions.

Ask what time they usually go to bed, get up etc. In my house it's stay out of the way while we get ready for work. I am not a morning person. Try not criticise your in-law child, however wrong they are! Don't kick the cat.
Ask if you have a favourite TV show, rather than drop hints...

Don't walk round the house in your outdoor shoes....

Don't hang your knickers on the blind in the kitchen...

Don't talk to Canadians as if they are grateful for the Empire

Be a saint, perfect in every way....

Nah, sounds like a rant from me. I am enjoying having my mum here. I'm just not the most tolerant person generally!

Or ask them if they'd like to be American, like my FIL did

Have a blast with your MIL.Take her to the country, buy a christmas tree
or chop one down from the tree farm.Maybe do voluntary christmas cheers
with her for the foodbank, soup kitchen, wrapping presents at a mall for
charity,carol singing,etc.

Take her on a ski doo and have fun in snow.
When you both have fun and laughter ,the time will fly by so quickly
and less energy is spent in finding ways to dodge her.

I took mine on the back of my ATV in the snow. It only took two do-nut rotations before she decided it wasn't for her. She won't go near it now.
