Ticket, Ticket,Ticket.
Hi
Can somebody please educate me. I recently received a ticket (fine) for driving my vehicle whilst not being registered in Saskatchewan. Fair cop, no problems, no excuses, I simply forgot to register. However the fine I received seems very harsh to me $580.. Can anybody please inform me how these fines are calculated. Is it a set fee or does it go by how many days you were not registered?

You could always look at this to see if eligible

So tickets are not tickets, they are insurance premium hikes?
How can you not be registered? Did you leave your insurance in BC or ab when you moved? Didn't change plates or insurance companies?
So much for me to try and take in....
If visiting the province, do I need yo register?

Thanks for the reply. I searched the SGI website for details but to no avail. I will give them a call tomorrow to see if they can explain to me how these fines are calculated. Such a confusing system to me...

You can visit provinces without registering elsewhere. You register where you reside and usually have X amount of days after moving to register and insure in the new province.
Every province will be a little different, in BC basic insurance and registration is done at the same time, and you get a new sticker for the year.
If you fail to renew when it expires and get a new sticker and a cop sees it you will get a ticket, can also get a ticket I believe even if you have renewed but failed to put on the new sticker but not sure if that is a fine or fix it ticket.
AB likely has a different method since I believe you have private car insurance there.

I have no problem with this ticket, I am guilty as charged. I just can`t get my head around the amount of $580. It just seems an excessive amount to me.

Depends on the offence and how many points. More points results in premium hikes. Drivers with more points represent a higher risk, therefore premium penalty.
The odd one is excessive noise, loud exhaust, fine plus 3 points in BC. How do loud pipes increase driver risk ?

I received a fine for speeding which was much less than the $580 for none registration. I would have thought it would have been the other way around!

Not registering is more serious than a speeding ticket. Speeding tickets can get up there, depending how much over you are. An unregistered vehicle is untraceable in the event of a crime or road incident.

Thanks for replying, it becomes much more clear now. Effectively, failing to report you have moved and then not getting insurance in the new province could be a reason for the old company to invalidate your insurance. That is serious.
JS. Yes we have private insurance here, much like UK. The cost for me is $1700.

We pay about 1560 for a 2012 Mazda 2. That is with the max discount which is around 42%. I might be off a bit on the discount percent but it's around that mark.

You could dispute it and plead guilty to a lesser charge? Seems to happen all the time here in ON, don't know what it's like there...

How can their be a lesser charge of driving without valid registration unless the officer was prepared to ignore the no valid registration and give a lesser charge of perhaps not displaying a valid registration sticker or having an obscured licence plate.

Re: Ticket, Ticket,Ticket.
We don`t display stickers over here in Saskatchewan no more, that was fazed out a couple of years ago. Canada is so confusing with every Province having its own different rules and regulations.
Since we have lived in Canada we have received numerous tickets all with various levels of financial punishment. My question is "how is the level of financial punishment calculated?". On what basis?
* Received ticket for
Parking too close to a bus stop $?
Parking in the wrong direction of traffic (outside our house, we live in a crescent!) $?
Parking in front of a mail box $?
Speeding in a school zone (school is in a commercial area of the city - lots of tickets here) $250
Speeding in the middle of nowhere (15 kmh over speed limit on one of the longest straightest roads you could imagine, not a kid in sight, cop was hiding in the bushes) $150
$250 dog not registered (sorry Max we forgot all about you)
$100 walking my dog in a off leash dog park without having a leash in my possession (my dog weighs 15lb, any problem I just pick him up)
Driving without due care and attention (SUV driving 15kmh in side street, wheel hit a deep ice rut and bumped across into a parked car). We contested this in court as we blamed the City for not grading the side streets. Judge told us "This is Canada you have to drive to the conditions".$?
No registration on vehicle $580... I shall repeat this just so you know it was not a typo $580.
They may be others I have missed. Am I a criminal? I feel like one. Should I be deported back to the UK where I never received a driving endorsement in 15 years and zero criminal convictions.
The point I am making here is that this particular part of Canada has a ticket mentality to enforce the law and prevent crime. Instead of ticket, ticket.ticket would it not be better to have education, education, education? Is it not in the best interest of the general public to prevent crime rather than to have to enforce it?
