Has anyone been there, seen the place,is it cold ?
Where do people work in there are there any companies?
Looking on MLS houses there are lovely and not too expensive.

My son goes to college at Thunder Bay i have been to collect him but did not see a lot of it The car trip up there was fantastic with some of the views breath taking we go around the great lakes to get there.When he comes in from work i will get some details off him for you

According to the guy on the phone it's so cold you get to ski and and do speed skating all winter for fun.

Was there last week for a course - love it! I think if I had to move to a city in Ontario Thunder Bay would be it. I think its a nice compact city, loads of green spaces and you've got downhill and XC skiing in the winter. Its got everything there that any other city has, with perhaps less 'culture', ie. theatre, restaurants and all that than somewhere like Toronto or Vancouver, but then it has a much smaller population, so whaddya expect??

Its a great place if you can work at the college..

Other wise its the paper mill,

yes the winters are a bit longer, but summer makes up for it

the reality is the house prices in canada reflect the standard of living quite well

the cheaper the houses the less chance you have of finding a job and the lower the pay for the job if you get it!!

Depends on your outlook on life and how you define quality of life - do you define as the size of your house/possessions, etc or by quality family time that you get when you don't have to work all those extra hours to get that good wage!

Actually, I have heard that even the paper mills have been closed and work gone to China. Jobs gone

Hi Gezza, not sure if we're too late with this reply but we're moving out to Thunder bay In October. I've been offered a permenant job in the healthcare system and we went to visit this summer so we could see if we liked it. Trish B has said it all - its a beautiful place, with great scenery and has everything you could need ,just on a smaller scale.

We spoke to lots of locals while there as we'd heard about the winters being never ending and very cold - they are cold but not never ending!! It sounds like everywhere else that has lots of snow, everyones prepared for it and there seems to lots of winter activities to get involved with so you can still enjoy the great outdoors, just wrap up extra warm!!


Anyway, we'll be experiencing it all first hand later this year so we can let you know!!

I can not be sure yet if are going there but it sounds very good.
I know this kind of winter from Calgary.
It means you can't just nip out top the corner shop without a jacket!

Thunder Bay's economy is not doing very well and it is even losing population. I don't know of another city in Canada where the price of housing actually decreased last quarter. In comparison to most other Canadian cities, housing is extremely cheap in TB.

I can only say with xperience of having been there (twice this year so far, going back in September) that it's actually a very nice place. It has all the usual things that any other small Canadian city has.

Not everyone wants to live in throbbing cities packed with traffic and people! There's a lot more to Canada than Toronto, Vancouver and Calgary! And not everyone is obsessed with booming economies, buying a bigger house and having more material possessions. May as well just go back to the UK if that's the case!
