Hi, I'm new to this forum and have read a thread from 2010 about someone planning a move to Thompson.

I wondered if anyone knows if the crime rate has got any better since?

Also, being close to the artic circle, what's the worst scenario for daylight lengths in winter? I've tried searching for this with no exact results.

My husband is considering a job move within the company he currently works for and so we have spent a fair bit of time researching as much as we can about Thompson.

Plus if anyone has experiences to share about this place that would be really appreciated.

We realise it is pretty remote, which we feel from this side of the decision we could settle into quite well, we like nice things, but we cope fine on the basics.

Also, does anyone know what the health care is like? I have severe Anaphylaxis to a long list of fruit and over here in the UK I have a good support network at my local hospital.

Also, how easy to take my dog? Is theft of dogs big there?

I have never been to Thompson, but I work with Winnipeggers, some have worked as tradespeople up there.

It's simply a tough mining town, its a fabulous place if your into hunting fishing or snowmobiling etc. If I was single and wanted to make a lot of cash in a short time, I would consider it, but I definitely would not want to raise a family there.
If you are passionate about a move to Canada and this is a way in, then consider it...

My guess, based on less remote areas

Care will be basic and anything bigger will require an airlift and you'd better hope the weather will permit it..

Thompson is not 'close to the Arctic'. (though granted it probably feels like it). It is remote as hell though.

A quick Google reveals that Thompson Manitoba is situated at 55 45N, which puts it slightly SOUTH of Glasgow (55 47N). So your worst daylight hours will be longer than most of Scotland, say 9am-4pm in late December.

I still wonder what the crime rate is like? As a lot of website have concluded its top on the crime list, well near the top. But I can't seem to see a figure anywhere because is the crime rate bad for Canada but good compared to England or is it bad bad!?

We're not having children so no to the family scenario.
I am a very outdoors type of lady, granted I'm not use to the severe weather but we both love outdoor activities, hiking etc. I would love to learn snow sports. Over here in the uk I am looking at getting a shotgun license so hunting would be something I'd be keen on doing out there for meat.

We are very passionate about moving to the USA or canada and Canada has come up before but it wasnt the right time. Whereas now, I would jump at the chance once knowing all the caboodle.

The high wage is appealing in the sense that it would help fund flights too and from canada for either ourselves or parents.

To give you a general idea, you can Google crime stats for both countries. Canada has more murders per capita, but less petty crime than the UK. So if Thompson is high up on the murder rate for Canada, then it's going to be quite a bit higher than the UK.

Do you have a route to PR if you go over with this job? If you had PR then you could obviously move on if you hated Thompson, so that's worth thinking about trying to get asap.

What kind of meat could you hunt that far north?

Googling Thompson suggests that it's a bleak and violent place with a declining population consistently in the top three places for crime in Canada (Williams Lake BC and some place in Saskatchewan are the other two). I imagine there's a large aboriginal population and that that relates. I think you'd have to view in the way you might assignment to Murmansk, somewhere to have lived in order to make all subsequent places look good.
The only redeeming feature seems to be that the mayor is called Tim Bits.

The crime and social problems relates to gangs and drug culture abundant in a community where there is a lot of disposable income- ie. the huge nickel bonus that the miners get,
Also, the relationship between aboriginals and non aboriginals is 'strained' in a community like this, very unfortunate.

Umm! It's a tricky one, on one hand we really like the look of the place, the fact that we are away from the hustle and bustle of life and it's a new experience for us...but the crime really concerns me. I'm not sure if it's enough to put me off though, and if it's not, would be then making a huge mistake if something was to then happen to us out there!

I'm not saying its a bad place for everyone, I just wouldnt want to raise kids there.
If you are 'outdoorsy' with no kids - you will probably love it.
My friend tells me that it is rare to see an old snowmobile on the back of an old truck in Thompson- what he was implying was that if you are employed in the right field you will be well off- as most people are, and can afford the latest toys!
Let me speak to him about the crime, he has relatives who live there...

Yeah it is, the figures are something in the hundreds mark for just England. And more so with the breed I have at the minute as they one crafts over here last year, people are stealing them left right and centre. Random I know. :sneaky:
