You don't have that in NZ. Aucklands a dump, Wellington is nice enough but no mountains & miles from anywhere, Christchurch is even more isolated & more like a town than a city.

I guess they both have mountains & lakes, plus it rains a lot...

Eh? I think I can say something on this having lived in Welly for 3 years. Everything you say about Van is applicable to Wellington except for the mountains. The sea is actually clean there too, no way would I step in the water around Vancouver. You can't argue that Welly isn't an isolated city mind.

Very true. I've been here for years and never once thought of it as isolated at all. You also never mentioned the oregon coast which is kick ass. .

It isn't isolated 'NZ' style, but Vancouver is pretty isolated from other major centres, Seattle apart. Oregon is an 8-10hr drive, so it hardly a weekend trip. Getting to virtually any other major centre involves at least a 3hr flight.

Never said it was a weekend trip. We used to regualry do the drive as my OH's sister lives in Eugene. The drive is what the coast is all about. It still relatively close.

I don;t think of a 3 hour flight as being that long. Suppose i've been here too long.

I like that the Vancouver airport is nice and close. When I ever went on holiday back home, we always end up flying out of Luton or Gatwick. It take ages to get to the airport what with the traffic jams and contra flow road-works that no one was there because it was a Saturday. And of course, when you finally arrived, checked your luggage in, the flight would be delayed because of fog. We only wanted to go to Magaluf ffs. It'd take 12 hours.

I think that a lot of the slamming of vancouver is a reaction to how up it's arse the city council and the media is. Can't they just let it be what it is without going on about world class this and that at every possible opportunity.

Yes I agree.

You mention one other city, abroad at that, and 3 hours drive away.

I call that isolated.

I've just had dinner with a couple of expat NZers. THey tend to agree with my comparison between Vancouver and Christchurch, except they think the weather's better in Christchurch.

I take your 3 years and raise you 20. I win!

Van weather is better by far imo. Why? Wellington wind. If you truly lived there for 3 years you should remember it. I certainly do..two steps forward, blown 3 steps back. One thing I do not miss, though I do love Welly.

I don't know what to say to the second part of your post. It feels like you're clutching at straws to me.

Van is nothing like Christchurch. haaaa. But okay, I guess Toronto is kinda like Hamilton, I suppose. Come to think of it, I could see Dunedin having a touch of Calgary too.

I'll take your word for it. It's not my opinion but that of the two folk from NZ with whom I had dinner tonight.

Which Hamilton?

Hi
You gotta admitt NZ wins, :rofl:it has more sheep than vancouver, And probably more than BC has.
Although apparently a lamb dinner costs almost the same price in both places, according to a recent visitor.

Personally I think Vancouver should be run down more often... this will mean less new arrivals here. ( true me being selfish)
cheers
Jerry

Jerry

This is roughly the level of sophistication you would expect from Vancouver folk.
