Thinking About Moving to Canada
 

First off Hi all,

Now everyone probably has heard this topic before, but hey might as well ask.

I have been thinking about a move to Canada for long time, something i have always wanted to do.

Currently i Live and work in Aberdeen, in the Oil and Gas field as a Systems Engineer basically i install, fix and offer support for various systems in the oil industry World wide. I have worked in this position for over 3 years now. I'm qualified to a MSC level also.

Basically i'm planning on working in either Edminton, Toronto or Nova Scotica, did does not necessary have to be restricted to oil industry and prob will do something simular.

I have done the points assessement and quilify for this easily, basically as i have never done this before i have a few questions (these may be silly ones :D)

1. Is it best to apply for job first or apply for visa, or do both??
2. I have seen different stories about timescales, now if i say have employment arranged be it an internal transfer witinin my company or other job how long can i expect the process of a visa to go through.
3. What is the average house price (1 bedroom) to buy or rent??
4. Can anyone recommend a website that gives good advise on relocating to Canada etc..

That'll prob do for now, any help will be greatly appreaciated.

You will find all the info at the very top of the page under the heading of WIKI.

There is so much info there you will need a week to read it, and you can find out prices of houses on www.mls.ca - tinternet is a wonderful thing :thumbsup:

Hello, Steve, and welcome to the BE forum.

Apply for job first.

An internal transfer can be quick, say a couple of months. If it's another job, it could take weeks if the occupation is eligible for an Expedited Labour Market Opinion. Otherwise it might take anywhere from a few months to a year, but that's still a lot quicker than getting in without a job.

This varies across Canada. For house purchases, check out the Multiple Listing Service website. For rentals, follow the links in the Wiki article on Renting.

I believe the British Expats website gives pretty good information. I suggest you read the Wiki section. There's a link to it in my signature, below.

As Ms Moochops says, the wiki is a great place to start.

My OH works in the oil industry as a ROV pilot/survey engineer and through his company got transferred to St John's in Newfoundland, and we moved over last November from the Aberdeen area. We had been looking to apply as skilled workers, but that process was going to take so long, we looked into getting work first, and luckily his company were happy to move him over to St John's (and we were delighted having been to Newfoundland on holiday and fallen in love with it).

The whole process from applying to the PNP program (as we had secured employment) to moving over on work permits took about 14 months in total, and we hope to get our permanent residence this year.

There is an oil boom in Newfoundland at the moment, with projects located in the waters of the province (white rose and hibernia), therefore a lot of work coming up.

for an idea of house prices, as well as mls, www.remax.nf.ca for only houses in newfoundland. However, there is a bit of a boom going on here with property, and houses are selling quickly at the moment and some not even making it on to these websites.

The quickest way to get to Canada will be an oil job. Which means either Alberta or Newfoundland. Can't speak for Alberta but Newfoundlands a great place!;)

fellow dandy by any chance ?

i would say this is the best website by far for advice

alberta is prob the place to be from a work angle & tax breaks etc

are you moving out on your own / family ?

- you thought about Perth in Aus, KL, etc etc ?

prob with oil & gas is all the hellholes that go with it baku,port hartcourt,st johns etc ; just kidding ax

Probably the easiest route might be through your current company (if you like them and they like you!!)

My friend's hubby worked for BP in a few countries around the world before they ended up in Alberta. When they got here my friends decided they didn't want to move the kids any more and they liked it here, so they applied for permanent residence and still live here. The guy now works out of the country in uzbekistan (or something-stan) as he's always had itchy feet! :rofl:

The rest of the family has settled here though and are very happy.

If it's the oil/gas industry you want, then surely North Alberta should be your destination?
