My husband and I have been in Calgary for almost 3 months now and I find the following more expensive than the north east of England:

Groceries (a lot more!- I only buy fresh ingredients and have basically become a vegetarian because I refuse to spend so much on chicken- I didn't eat red meat anyway so I don't know about that)
Mobile phone plans (again- insanely more expensive even for SIM only like we got)
Home internet (though HUGELY faster than at home!)
Alcohol
Car insurance
Over the counter medication (I miss 17p paracetamol)
Cosmetics- even shampoo etc.

Cheaper for us:
Clothing
Eating out at comparable restaurants
Gas
House insurance (not by much but a little bit less)
Public transport

The same:
Rent (again comparable- and it includes our bills here but not having council tax sort of keeps it around the same)
Electronics
Take-out food seems to be the same

At our equestrian business here in BC, we charged $495 p/mth (indoor stall with daily turnout, or outdoor minimum 1/2 acre irrigated grass paddock and shelter). Use of outdoor and heated indoor arenas were included, along with showers (human and horse), lounge (human only), 20 acre cross country course, Kraft horse walker and direct access to Crown Land for trail riding. All hay and hard feed were included, clients supplied any supplements.

Shoeing costs starts at around $100 depending on farrier, trimming around 1/2 that price.

Here, indoor board goes from $400 to a couple of grand. Many barns will tie a lesson requirement to the board price. Facilities do matter but, at some point, it's the barn's connections that drive the price - is it an 'A' circuit barn? Is there a Big Name Trainer? Prices vary by season as, in the winter, the serious riders and coaches have gone to the Florida circuit. Other people take their horses home for the summer and only board in the winter for the use of the indoor.

We're very much at the $400 end of the market. Hoof trims are $40 though the last farrier visit was $200 for one horse due to an abscess and the need for temporary plastic undershoes. Worming is $10, vaccinations a couple of hundred, the OOTB has a vitamin supplement at $50/month and some sort of performance food at a similar price. And then there's the saddle pad addiction...

GBP200/week for the basic service it says. I didn't read on to see if there were other implied charges such as lessons or valet parking fees. $200/week is enough here to finance having an unbroke horse boarded and trained for western riding.

Mine's been falling steadily, it's under $500/month now. It's still my largest automotive cost though. The commuter car goes 30,000 miles a year. That's $100/week in petrol, $100/week in servicing and whatnot + the insurance.

Looks like single Malts are a lot cheaper in UK. I might do a similar spreadsheet for here! Bombay Sapphire is around £10 at current exchange rates, mind you a bottle of local rum is £3 for 1.5 litres and it's perfectly acceptable with a bit of cola!

I was looking at buying a Scottish whiskey that you can only buy from the distillary in Scotland but some of the BC Liqour stores stock it.

It's £35 if brought from the distillary but it's $80 here + tax and recycling fee etc.

Not really a fair comparison when one considers the shipping and handling costs from the highlands of Scotland to a BC Liquor Store.
