Hi all, My family and i are due to visit Halifax next week between 18/8 to 24/8 I was wondering if anybody knows of any worth while events, shows, or places to see or visit Thanks.

Hi Guys

If this is your first visit then the most popular tourist spots would be Peggy's Cove, Lunenburg, Mahone bay, the South Shore (see Corky) or try a beach.

In Halifax itself you may like Citadel Hill, strolling along the waterfront, the casino, Pier 21 or one of the many museums.

Visit the tourist info upon arrival and you will be inundated with leaflets and ideas of how to spend a glorious week in and around HRM.

Is this a holiday our a scouting trip?

depending your age of children, a good night out with older kids(5 upwards) is the car races up near the airport. Every friday night from 7 to 10, bit like the nascar racing on a much smaller scale, but fun night, you might want to take earplugs, as it gets very loud. If you have a boy who loves cars then it's a worth trip to do.

if you're into military history there's some napelonicesqueish fortifications at point pleasant park - martello towers and suchlike

Busker festival finishes on 20th August.
We've just hoiked the inlaws around Lunenburg/Mahone Bay/Peggy's Cove today - the standard 250km round trip, second time in three weeks... Worth it for the scenery definitely and the clambering around on the rocks at Peggy's Cove.
Harbour Hopper is supposed to be good to see the city from water and land, a little pricey though.
Also there are countless opportunities to sail around the harbour and out into the Atlantic to see whales and the like.
Beaches are good, Crystal Crescent is great on the east of the city, down through Sambro and Spryfield (this will give you a chance to see where not to live too :)). West, out through Dartmouth on the 107 there are beaches on Lake Echo (with life guards) and Porter's Lake. Carry on along the 107 and then the 7 to Musquodaboit and there is Martinique beach - very long, very sandy beach. Currents a bit dicey and there is quite a drop off so don't let the kids go in. Finally about 50km from Halifax, also along the 107 from Dartmouth is Clam Harbour beach, it's poorly sign posted but is at the "Heritage Village" turn off from the 7. On the 20th August it's the sand castle competition, so if you go, either get there early (9am or before) to see them being built or late (4pm onwards) to catch a glimpse before the kids trample on them, any other time and you have to park about 5 miles away!

Clam Harbour is a great beach - we used to go there every summer when I was growing up. Huge expanses of white sand and one of the safer ocean beaches as there is no undertow and when the tide comes in there are all sorts of little shallow pools for smaller kids. Just watch out for the jelly fish!

But to get to Clam Harbour takes a lot of time to get there from Halifax- Nova Scotia must lose its sand to Cape Cod :D ; can't think of any other reason why there is a lack of many decent beaches on the Canadian shore.
