I thought of you when I was saying I had no identifiable accent - you're the only person to ever say it was Edinburgh, I was thrilled :D My accent does change a lot depending on where we're living, who I'm speaking to... Mr B says it's because I'm a shallow cow, I say it's down to my musical ear

Actually Ray has a "put a soundbite" thread in the lounge at the moment, maybe I'll record one and let BE decide if I sound Scottish

Having watched the tragic funerals for the Canadian soldiers killed in Afghanistan, they have bagpipes playing at the ceremony so that also shows the Scottish heritage and tradition here in Canada.
(Why isn't there a "sad" smiley to post here  )

Not wanting to nit-pick but the thing with the bagpipes is more to do with Canada's military procedure/protocol being based on Britain's than it is to do with Scottish ancestry/influence.

<BTW, I am the last person to take the pi$$ out of Canada's military; my wife is in it and her brother was badly wounded in Afghanistan not too long ago>

But they are still a Scottish tradition (OK originally Breton) and do sound very soulful at these tragic ceremonies.
I am so sorry to hear about your brother-in-law; I do hope that he is recovering. This must have been a nightmare for all of you.

Calgal- :( is a frown - which though can be gloomy can also be an angry feeling so I feel uncomfortable using that - just a little sad look was all I wanted and needed again.

Galic tradition actually (they are also indigenous to Ulster at least).
However there is (limited) evidence of a similar instrument being used in Greece and possibly predating recorded use of the pipes in what is now known as the UK.

Nightmare isn't the word for it. Physically, he is slowly recovering. I nearly threw up when my MIL sent us some photos of him after he was repatriated.

Emotionally, well, don't burst any balloons near him.

Souv,

This is the second young man injured in Afghanistan I've heard about in the last two days.

A good friend in Edmonton just told me his sons best friend was critically injured six days before his tour was up. He has severe brain injuries. Although it looks like he'll make it the prognosis is unknown.

Please accept my best wishes for you and your family.

Steve

I agree that Irish pipes are different. My point was that Bagpipes (of the highland style) are widely played in Ulster.

Thanks Steve (and to Butch). My BIL was wounded in mid-May, and he's far from being young. However, he bought me a compressor and nail gun for Christmas, so I love him to bits.

I'm not the praying type but, if I were, my thoughts would be in the Edmonton area.
