Default Tenants (Contents) Insurance Ontario

Hi,

Does anyone have any recommendations as per tenants insurance for Condos in Toronto?

We are moving to a new place next week and need to get insurance for the contents of the flat.

Ideally if there are any insurance companies that also offer gadget cover/bike cover that would be great too.

I took a look at a quote from State Farm which had a huge $1000 deductible fee - seems a lot to me, unless that is standard for Canada (I am from the UK - only having emigrated in June)

Any suggestions or recommendations be great.

Thanks, Pete

We have our house insurance from BCAA ..... connected with the American AA (Automobile Association). Many years ago, we had tenants insurance from them.

I think the Ontario version is CAA (Canadian Autmobile Association), though there seem to be different branches for different parts of your province.

We've always been happy with them, and they have paid quickly when we have needed to make a claim.

Do ask for Replacement Value of your goods ............. heaven forbid anything happens, but you will find that a sofa, for example, will cost much more to replace than your old one was worth

Tenant's and Condo policies have different wordings to reflect the different risks according to whether or not the occupant owns the property. I would have thought that all major insurers offer both. I know that the largest Canadian-owned insurance business in Canada offers both with a choice of deductible starting at $0 and that "scheduled articles" including bikes can be added to either.

We have our tenants insurance (which also covers you for accidental damage to the landlords fixtures and fittings) through RBC insurance. I know our strata's by-laws require the owner to hold condo insurance and the occupier (if not the owner) to hold tenants insurance.

My contents insurance is through State Farm, $500 deductible and I pay $15 a month for $30.000 in coverage.

Two things... is that a referral link?

Do I have to call up to create an account?

It is a 'personal recommendation link'. They used to give you a one-time $10 discount on your insurance if you got them a new customer who renewed after their first year.

They don't do that any more.

The bigger benefit was that the person getting a quote got a $10 Home Depot card just for being referred. Just for getting a quote.

That seems to have stopped now - just clicked on my own link and it isn't mentioned any more.

There doesn't actually seem to be a reason for personalized links now lol.

Do you have to call? No, should all be online.

Strange, doesn't let me get a quote without signing into an account that I don't have and doesn't give any clue as to how to get one which means I assume one has to call them up, defeating the whole point of a convenient online quote. Guess I'll go somewhere else then.

I've used both https://www.squareoneinsurance.ca and Tenant Insurance - Get an Online Quote - RBC Insurance

I had Square One before I purchased my car, and hadn't needed auto insurance at the time, and they were great. I went with RBC because we have a work group policy for home and auto, so there was a discount for that.
