Telus - a word of warning
 

On arriving we went to the local Telus shop we get mobiles. That worked out fine and the chap asked us to go back to see him for internet service once we had our land line sorted which we did. He told us that we could not get broad band in the area where we lived and the dial up service was pretty dreadful and said what we needed was to be connected by satelite. If you signed up for broadband/dial up Telus gave you a free computer but not for satelite and you had to have a lap top not desk top system. So off we go pay $2000 for the laptop and return to Telus and they set it up for satelite. Great after a couple of weeks without the internet we are back on line. This sytem would cost $40 per month for a set time but we shouldn't need anymore than that well that is what we were told. After using the new system for 3 days simply to check emails and a bit of research into various things (maybe 10 hours at the very most on line) my husband gets a phone call from Telus asking if he is aware of our current bill. Yes he says $40 no they say $4600.00. (I have got the decimal point in the right place and yes it is four thousand six hundred dollars). The satelite sytem went and surprisingly we are now back on line and yes we have broad band. Telus did issue us with a credit but we bought a laptop we don't need and have had sleepless nights over it.

You have been warned.
If you are told you can't get broadband,check it out and don't get a satelite sytem no matter what unless you are prepared to pay big money to use it.

Mmm we have gone with telus, we got a free wireless modem and a free computer and pay $39 a mth for a year then it will go up to $45. Not had any problems. We carn't get cable tv, where we are living, so had to go with satelite tv and that cost us $50 for 2 boxes and upto 4 connections and installation and we get are first 2 mths free. Dont no how that compares with cable.

We have satellite internet from a local provider. iirc it was $800 to set up. It's $130/month for lots of everything. It works well when it works but it's a bit weather prone.

Satellite, all channels, high speed modem, phones with all the extras plus free long distance, $170 a month, One Bill.

Bell doesn't offer satellite internet. You must have satellite TV with ADSL (phone line) internet which is fine if you can get it but it's not available in rural areas.

Can't you get cable where you are? The advice you've received sounds very dodgy. Unless the satellite hardware required a PC card type slot, there's no reason you wouldn't have been able to use a desktop. And, without wishing to sound harsh, you should probably have shopped around a bit before buying a laptop as you can get perfectly good systems for around $500 these days.

What was the 4k for? I don't get it. How much is it per Gb?

Nothing to do with satellite, but I signed up for Bell thinking it was unlimited (believed what I was told on another forum!) and it wasn't, it was 30Gb a month limit. I phoned them up to cancel after 1 day, they asked what would make me stay, I told them min 60Gb and they gave me that instantly for free. It can be worth throwing your toys out of the pram now and again :)

We signed up for Solo mobiles (part of Bell) when we arrived on their $25 / month with unlimited incoming calls (we couldn't believe that you are CHARGED for incoming calls on cell phones). Despite it saying "unlimited incoming calls" on our receipt we were charged $32 / month which is $25+$7 for the "unlimited incoming calls".

Despite hundreds of letters and calls to Solo and Bell they said it was down to the salesman who sold us the package and what a surprise he no longer worked at the shop we bought them from.

Where's OFT when you need them?

Needless to say that we aren't with Solo / Bell anymore. I know it's only $7 a month but still..........

we did shop round and we were advised to get this one as it was best suited to the satelite system and it was far from the dearest we were offered. It doesn't help having 'sucker' tattooed on my forehead!!

Wow I thought I had been scammed by Telus but yours is far better. We bought a Telus $10 dial up card while in temporary accomodation. Tried to use it to no avail, came up with a different error message everytime I tried to connect. I called their "helpline" about 5 times, suspect that its an offshore call centre. Whatever the option you choose you get through to someone who listens patiently to your problem, then says "oh, you need to speak to prepaid"...(even if you choose the prepaid option) and puts you through to a fax line.....


Yes, avoid Telus
