Default Television industry in Toronto

Hi all,

I have been wanting to work abroad for sometime, mainly in the US? But since posting my on the US forum I have come to release that Toronto would be a better or (dare I say) easier than the US not just getting a job but also in terms of getting working visa.

I am just wondering if anyone work in the Media industry preferably the post production area, who would give me some advice on the industry or how they made the jump ...etc.

Here is my post on the US forum for your information...

I have done some research regarding visa, but it down on me that the best way to get a working visa would be to actually find a job first (i know easier said than done).

What I am asking is what strategy should I approach this, as I am going there on holiday to visit family in December I really want to come back with some sort of information or just take the opportunity to speak with someone. But not sure how to go about it.

Your opinion would be very appreciated.

Thank you

Hi, and welcome to the Canadian side of the forum!

As I asked on your US thread, are you by any chance aged 30 and under? If so, your easiest/quickest option would be a Working Holiday Visa, which is a year's open work permit.

If not, then have a look at this to understand your visa options - http://britishexpats.com/wiki/Quick_...an_Immigration

Good luck.

Yeah, I am under 30. 24 to be specific

Will have a look that option, does the holiday visa work like normal working visa in terms of it won't be a problem getting hired on such visa (obviously its for short space of time)

Thank you again

Perfect, in which case that's probably your best bet. You can get a 2nd IEC visa, so that would give you two years - hopefully plenty of time to convince an employer you're wonderful and they need to try and keep you by helping you get PR!

You're going to be much more employable, as you'll be work authorized on an open work permit, so an employer doesn't need to go through the paperwork/hassle/wait of hiring you on a normal Temp Work Permit.

Only thing I would say is that if you are interested in going soon, don't delay as there are only a certain number of IEC visas available each year, and last time I check there were approx 2000 out of 5350 left for this year, so they're going fast.

Once you've got it, you've got approx a year to enter Canada and activate it, so plenty of time if you're not quite ready to go yet, or you could wait and apply under next year's program .

Best of luck.

Thanks, I am planning to see out this year in England and apply next year, just gathering as much information as I can this year.

So I'm assuming IEC visa I wouldn't have to find work before arriving to the country?

OK, so the program will open for 2013 in January, and you would be able to go from about March/April onwards (and have a year to enter once you've got the visa).

And no, no job offer is required for IEC.

Get on mandy.com and you will find jobs posted there.

Editing is fun although I'm more in to PM, Location managing/scouting and production assistant. Have applied to study at HUmber starting september.

Toronto and Vancouver are good places to look at. Even Montreal.

There is actually a lot of film editing jobs in Toronto if you don't mind the subject matter. Good money too by all accounts. Most of the jobs are in Toronto's very vibrant porn industry, a lot of which is centered in the Liberty Village area (those old factories and lofts are full of small porn production companies.) But the work isn't for everyone.

The porn industry! I heard its booming everywhere even in the UK, we now even have 5 babe stations on freeview alone

But in serious note I think Mandy.com and even LinkedIn sounds like a good idea.

From searching around I can only find maximum 1 year stay not 2 years as you suggested. I maybe looking at a different thing ...

I've worked 30 years in the post production industry, both in Toronto and Los Angeles. Here's the facts so that you go in with eyes wide open.

The various colleges and universities in the province of Ontario have 23 degree granting programs in the area of media / broadcast / post production. Each year these schools have a combined graduating class of about 600 to 800. Perhaps 60% of these grads will ever find work in the industry. Those who do find work typically start on a contract basis, working project to project, or full-time, but not as a regular employee of the company. They can expect to start out on the bottom rung and work their way up the ladder over the years. Paying your dues if you will.

If you have previous experience working as an editor on mid to high end projects, you have a reasonable chance of landing a job straight away as an editor. However if you're just starting out, you'll have to pay your dues just like everyone else. This could be as an edit assist, tape op, dailies tech etc.

Building a career in the movie, TV and commercial industry takes a while.

The best places to look for work are:

Good luck!

No, you're looking at the right thing, but just not reading it right! As I've said above, you can get a 2nd IEC visa - so although it's for one year, you can have two of them.

Hope that clarifies it.

Wow, and I thought Canadian TV simply entailed taking US and UK TV and charging you more to watch it...
