Tax returns

Hi,

I was wondering if I am entitled to any tax benefits whilst I work in Canada.
I have spoken to people in the past who say they have got rebates?
Any help in relation to this issue would be appreciated.

Thanks

Antony

You get rebates if you pay too much tax, you are getting your own money back without interest. If you are a tax resident of Canada your employer will get you to fill in a TD1 & TD1 prov. to get your basic allowances, anything else depends on your personal circumstances, married, disabled (with T2201) etc. At the end of the tax year, you file a return, if you paid too much you get some back, paid to little you get a bill. You have to self report interest and other income and pay tax at the end of the year, it is not source deducted.

I am not a resident of Canada, I am here on a twp, I have a wife and a 2 year old child. My wife is not working so do I get credit for them?
Is there anything I can claim or get credit for?

You are "tax resident".

How long have you been working on a TWP for? Iirc, you can claim child benefit but not until you've worked 18 months.

Edit: yep, 18 months. This Wiki article gives you the info - http://britishexpats.com/wiki/Family_and_Child_Benefits

Re: Tax returns

In Ontario you can claim your wife's tax free allowance. There are other deduction available as someone who has arrived this year. You will need to declare any world wide earning and tax paid.
We sought professional help for our first tax return to ensure we maximized our refund and also to learn about the system and process.

You are a temporary resident of Canada and a resident for tax purposes. All together different.

If you have filled in the TD1 and TD1 prov. this will give you all the allowances you can get at source. What others you can apply for depend on your personal circumstances and have to be applied for separately or claimed on your tax return. CCTB is calculated after you have filed your first tax return and get your notice of assessment.
