Tax Advisor Recommendation

Hi,

I've posted a few times on here and received some really helpful advice - so I'm hoping someone else might help me out again! I hope to repay the favour after we've moved!

My partner and I are intending to emigrate in November. I'm a citizen and we're putting together her permanent residence application at the moment.

I'm a UK qualified lawyer and am currently self-employed and working under a services contract for a British law firm. I'm going to continue to work for them after I move to BC.

I've reviewed the forum and there are a lot of threads on the tax implications of that sort of arrangement and whether or not to incorporate and if so in which country. The trouble is that there seems to be a lot of disagreement on the best way to arrange things!

My concern is that if I incorporate a Canadian LLC (and work as an employee for that LLC), I may well have to register that company as an NETP for VAT purposes in the UK and then get caught up with accounting for VAT that I would rather not have to collect in the first place! That problem might be avoided if I incorporate in the UK as my income is likely to be under the compulsory registration threshold but I would need to understand the consequences of doing that from a Canadian tax perspective.

It's such an important thing to get right that I've decided I would like to get some specialist advice and make sure that I'm doing things right from the outset.

I've had a brief discussion with my accountant in the UK and there are obviously Canadian accountants that I can contact in the town we're moving to - but what I'd really like is advice from someone who has expertise in both jurisdictions and can see both sides of the picture and provide some joined up advice. Is anyone able to make a recommendation?

I appreciate that specialist advice of that nature may not come cheap - I'm not looking for a freebie!

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks.

T

What about liability, as self employed and unincorporated are you not personally liable for any claims against you?

Thanks Siouxie - I will drop him a pm.p

Aviator - that's true but my services contract has a fairly tight limitation of liability clause.
