Taking my First steps
Hello All
I'm Allan, 38, married with two kids and we are looking to move out to Canada in the future. We have booked a week's vacation in Toronto but this is in October so I was wondering if anyone would like to share their experiences, opinions etc on what it takes to move out to and live in Canada..... I am an Oracle DBA with some 9 years experience so whilst I am in Toronto I will be looking to see what the job market is like. My wife Julie, is working for Local Government and we both have degrees so I am not sure how many 'points' that equates to in getting in to Canada. If anyone is in the Toronto area in October I would love to meet for a coffee and would dearly love to hear from anyone who can suggest other places to look for work etc. Looking forward to hearing from you all Cheers Big Al |

Re: Taking my First steps
Hi Big Al and Family
If you have time, read through old threads and you'll get many experiences from a wide range of people spread throughout the provinces. Some negatives, some positives , but often a wealth of information about all sorts of relevant subjects...........many you won't even have thought about yet. Best of luck with the research:thumbup: |
Re: Taking my First steps
Cheers R2D2
I will take your advice and spend more time looking through the old posts. What I am particularly interested in at the moment are links to job sites to see if I can post my CV etc. We are a tad worried that due to the time it takes to successfully apply to come to Canada, it will mean my eldest daughter will be approaching her exams, so it would be better for us as a family if I could get a job across there first and hopefully speed up the process. Cheers Al:blink: |

anyone been there who knows what its like? Anyway, my tuppence worth is 1 - wear comfy shoes 2 - take some water and choccie ! (refreshments are expensive and limited) 3 - try not to take kids if you can possibly help it - no offence, but we took ours and they bore quickly and you still want to trawl around a few more stands - we ended up splitting up to speak to several desks while the other sorted out the kids 4 - depending on which stage you are at, consider sitting in on the seminars - there is usually a general one about how to apply, points, permits, etc and there is usually one based on finances - again, no kids is useful at this point! 5 - talk to as many people as you can ! There will no doubt be representatives from most if not all of the provinces - you might completely change your mind on some things. Talk finance/pensions/banking. Talk immigration consultants. Bring home huge bundle of papers and leaflets and then sort out !! Enjoy Sorry - don't mean to hijack the thread Big Al !! |
Re: Taking my First steps
hi big al, sorry for hijackacking the threat, just wondered about the maple leaf forum, have cheked it out and it looks good, chitty chatty you know!
Thanks for the advice about the show, were not planning on taking the kids, have talked mum into having them for the weekend, so were gonna stay there as well , anyone stayed anywhere nice?? anyone else going, i hope to learn a lot! X Were in and around the same place as you , were just starting out aswell , it all seems a little daunting eh! Have found this board very helpful and have found out loads just reading through old threads. Were also planning on another trip to canada this year, later in the year though as we have hol to disney florida in may! We might end up in the same time frame xI If you fancy a chat just pm me, its nice to speak to those with the same plans! |

anyone been there who knows what its like? Don't take the kids !!!! Queuing up is the name of the game, and kids will go stir crazy Take a packed lunch. There is a cafeteria, but again....Queues You'll have representatives from most, if not all the provinces there, and they will go through the relevant PNP s with you if thats a route you are considering. |
Re: Taking my First steps
thanks- bang goes my lie in then !
looks like an early start for us then, do you have to pay to park there? |
