You should be able to find something here:

http://www.defra.gov.uk/animalh/quarantine/index.htm

I found where it does say this - in the following paragraph.
Your pet may not enter or re-enter the UK under PETS until 6 calendar months have passed from the date that a vet took the blood sample which gave a satisfactory test result. The date the blood sample was taken is shown in section V of the passport or certificate which the vet must complete (see part 2, steps 3 and 4).

Your pet requires only one blood test and 6 calendar month wait provided all subsequent rabies booster vaccinations are given by the required date.
This wait is necessary because an animal infected with rabies before vaccination would not be protected by the vaccine. Six months is the time needed for most infected animals to display any clinical signs of the disease.

I guess maybe a puppy has to be a certain age before a vet will give it a rabies shot, and then if you have to wait six months - probably it wouldn't be a puppy any more!

Re: taking my beagle back to UK

I would check with the airlines directly for the cost of flying him back. Anything else is just guesswork. I flew my animals back to the UK with BA and they went as cargo. They had a heated section of the hold to themselves and BA were just great. Apparently according to other threads some pets can go as excess baggage with other airlines. The most important thing is as Purley says. You must have the pet passport unless you want him to go into quarantine for six months and that would be awful for him.

Good luck
