System Admin / Technical Support jobs in Toronto?

How easy/difficult is it finding these kinds of jobs in Toronto? My husband would like to repatriate to Toronto later in the year, but his main concern is finding work. I have recommended that he apply for some jobs online, but I'm uncertain if employers would be willing to hire him without seeing him in person. Should we give it a go, or start the job hunt once we get there? We will have enough funds to get us by for the first few months. Thankyou.

I had very little luck trying from afar - the best I got was "call us when you get here". As it turned out, I managed to get a transfer with the company I worked for in the UK in the end.

I suppose that was an enormous help for you. Think he'll have any trouble finding a job when we get there? He would be more than willing to do any kind of work (within reason) courier, Future shop etc. As long as it pays the bills! Are there many jobs around Toronto if you're not picky?

Thanks for your feedback.

I can't answer for Toronto - we're some 3.5 hrs from there. Someone like dbd33 would be better placed to answer that.

I'd be very concerned if I lost my job here though, there's practically no IT presence other than small one man band type operations...

Thanks shelley, I have added those two sites to my favourites.

Yes, I've heard about the job situation in Windsor. My husband's cousin lives there (comp programmer) and has told us all about it. He thinks we should focus on Toronto or Mississauga. He said there are many jobs to be had there if you're not fussy, but of course we're looking for more reassurance from people who work in the IT sector. It's scary leaving everything you know behind, and stepping into the unknown with two dogs in tow! It would be sooo much easier if my husband could secure a job prior to the move. I hear networking plays a vital role in finding jobs for many...
So allow me to practise... Does any lovely forum member know of a job opening within the IT sector for a System Admin? :sneaky:

There's one here - http://britishexpats.com/forum/showthread.php?t=580081

A little bit further out than you're looking at though ;)

Thankyou. :sneaky:
Yes, it is a bit too far from Toronto. The reason we chose Toronto is because 1) He was born there, and 2) We would have relatives close by. BC sounds most appealing, though.

Networking places a big part in job hunting....my hubby is now in High Tech- he could'nt find work when we first came to Canada in his field (2002), and so started up a handyman business instead...paid the bills, now he placed an ad on Kiijiijii under work wanted, saying he wanted to get back into HT and luckily he seems to have found a nice position- it just takes perseverance...

Oh incidentally try the banking websites, cos they have high tech depts and BMO etc are always looking out for good techies.

Good Luck

Thanks for the info shelley! My husband will do as you suggested. Do you have any particular banking websites in mind? Thanks. :-)

You'd be lucky to find anything unless you're available for interview in person, though it doesn't hurt to try. At worst, you'll get a feel for the market and some practice in applying.

That said, a halfway competent systems admin isn't easy to find. So I don't think I'd turn my nose up at a good candidate just because they were on the wrong side of the world.

Before you ask, I'm not hiring right now. Sorry.

I thought the same way and that's why we decided to settle in Mississauga. What turned out is that while Mississauga is home to many big companies, too many of them have their IT either in US or in countries with milder climate. Starting November, the market was nearly dead. Now, surprisingly, I am getting many calls that drain my Rogers prepaid account. The job that I got is not in Mississauga or Toronto. Neither are others that I am told about.

What we found also was that even you are open to take any job, like in retail, before finding something that matches your profile, it's highly questionable. Prices for food and housing (i.e. things you need first of all) are so much higher that on a low budget, your life is far from fancy.

At the moment, there are a lot of out-of-work Tech Support people so it is likely that you will have to wait until you get here before anyone will consider you. There are definitely still jobs so if you are any good, you should be picked up fairly quickly. When you get here, feel free to send me your resume and I can forward it onto recruiter buddies in Ontario - that way it will get looked at quicker.

Good Luck!

Re: System Admin / Technical Support jobs in Toronto?

My personal experience from being in Canada at the moment.

I am a C# developer. I am currently in Vancouver since November from the UK and I am moving to Toronto in February. I posted my CV on Monster.ca last night to get prepared for arriving in Toronto and looking for work, I accident market it as searchable, this morning I was awoken by 7 recruitment calls ..... sounds great but they where all from vancouver! DOH! It seems that because my address on my CV is currently in Van they are interested but not one call from Toronto even though I marked Toronto as my target.

The point of my story is this they want you in the city before they spend an ounce of effort on you.

Best of luck in the search.

Tom
