Surrey, Vancouver

Hi All,

Looking for a little info.

My hubby has been offered a job in Vancouver and the company is based in Surrey, what is it like to live there and which areas should we avoid?

Thanks in advance

Surrey has the best and the worst areas in Metro Vancouver. Look at a map of the city and draw a line north-south down 160th street and east-west on 64th avenue. I would avoid the north west quadrant. This is, of course, a generalization.

The best area is called South Surrey and is south of 40th Avenue and west of 176th street.

Surrey is to Vancouver what Essex is to London

Surrey can be hit and miss but depending on what sort of an experience you want in Canada you may find it nearby. If you are looking for a smaller town feel you could easily live in Langley or Cloverdale and he would have a short commute and you would have much more affordable property, etc.

We live in Langley and if you want more info feel free to PM me.

Snap. My hubby has been offered a job in Surrey as well. We went over in May to have a look around. I agree with all the threads above. Some of Surrey is fine but I don't know if I'd like to work out where the best bits from over here. We looked around Cloverdale and Langley as well and they definately do have a nice feel. We liked North Delta, it's a little more expensive but lovely big plots. Good gardens for the kids.

What job has your hubby been offered. We were planning a reccie, but it seems like we are gonna be over there before the date we planned the trip.

I've lived in some rough places so nothing will suprise me xx

We started out in Surrey but decided it was not for us. There are some nice parts like Newtown but we looked at apartments around 104th street and they were truly nasty. Guildford looked to us a place worth avoiding. Though they did ave a nice shopping mall! Langley is very nice and not very far from Surrey.

Hubby is going to be working for Jellybean Hotrods on 64th street. Providing the work permits are all ok, sent them this week, Bob will be starting in March but I've got a business to sell, plus a house so it looks like the kids and I will follow later. Not looking forward to having the family split up. We loved Vancouver when we went over. My husband and I have lived in a small town next to the Peak District all our lives and I was worried it Vancouver would be over bearing and totally freek me out but not the case. We are only looking to the south of Vancouver so we don't have to cross any bridges on the commute. It only takes one accident and the whole thing clogs up, definately a bottle neck area.
Must be a little scary going straight over without a reccie trip 1st. How soon are you going?

We are maybe looking at June time, only because like yourselves we have a house to sell, but could be over there before, who knows. My hubby could probably go over their first and me and the kids follow but I don't think it's a really good idea for us lol, well me.

It's very exciting thinking that we will be over there by this time next year, hopefully settling in nicely, we've been wanting to go over there for many years so it's nice to finally get the chance while we are still young and our kids are little.

Would love to hear how you get on with selling your house and the move, so please keep in touch xx

Haven't got the house on the market yet. Doing a refurb to try and make it worth as much as possible, doing the kitchen at the moment...yuk...can't find a thing.

It is nice though thinking of us all being over there next year, pretty cool. It'll hopefully mean we'll all have a better summer.

Speak soon

Helen

Hi, we moved to surrey 6 weeks ago. In the newton area. people who know the area will say i am brave or stupid. I grew up here so im ok with it, but my brit wife hates it. there have been a couple of shootings here, so i imagine thats off putting. if you have a reasonable income or money behind you, i recommend langley or cloverdale. white rock is beautiful but expensive. wish id moved to langley, argh! Just remember, if the price for a property seems to good to be true, then it is. we pay 1525/mth for a 5bed/3 bath, but that is weirdly cheap and, like i say, the area reflects why. cost of living here is high in relation to earnings so factor that into the equation. so good luck with your move, hope it goes well, and remember, newton, whalley, guildford, noooooo! lol
