Hi we're thinking that the Calgary area may be a good one for us and wondered what suburbs are good areas to live in? Weve got 3 young children, currently in Kent on the outskirts of London and here have the best of both worlds being in a town very near the countryside but 30 mins commute to London. we dont want to be too isolated but dont want to be in the middle of the city either. Any suggestions to get us started on a bit of residential research? thanks

We were looking for the same balance and decided that the best bet for us was the area due west of the city centre. The Bow Trail is normally pretty free flowing even in rush hour, and the c-train is being extended out our way. We're in Westgate and my daily commute to downtown takes about 20 minutes normally (longer if the bus breaks down, like this morning:curse:). The city is very narrow east-west with good roads out the the mountains, so we can be out of the city within a matter of minutes. You do tend to get slightly less house for your money than you would in more remote suburbs like Somerset or McKenzie Town though.

I think that our favourite communities in this area of the west are Discovery Ridge (which has a great Indian take-away) and Summit of Montreux. They still have good access to downtown, but Discovery Ridge is next to protected woodland on the edge of the city and Montreux is up a hill with uninterupted panoramic views of the Rockies. Inevitably, they are also more expensive areas!

There are a few of us ex-Orpingtonians on here! We lived up near Tubbenden Lane around the station. Just out of interest have they finished the new Tescos at the end of the High Street yet?

You'll love the absence of chavs on scooters and mums in white leggings when you get here!

Today was a few inches of snow although it didn't bring us to a standstill like the UK recently ;)

Hi

Tesco is still under construction and I think it should be done by the summer?

Then wait for traffic chaos,::ohmy: around Christmas time, as you probaly aware of what its was like at Ruxley Tesco's, its going to be bad.

Off now to drop the kids off to school,I'll get back to you.

all the best

Can anyone tell me what the junior and senior high schools are like in these areas.

It really is a small world! We are living in Swanley, Kent just down the road from you and we're moving to McKenzie Towne in August! It does make me wonder, are there any Canadians left in Calgary or have us Brits completely taken over?!! :)

The surprising thing is that you rarely hear British accents when you're out and about, and when you do, you really take notice....I've met a few British people in my 6 months in Calgary but not too many.

Calgary is full of nice suburbs. I like Charleswood in the NW and Cedarbrae/Woodbine in the SW. If money was no object though then would love to live in Mount Royal. There are some beautiful homes around there.
