Student Visa Application - Proof of Identity

I am just about to complete my Student Visa application and I have read through the checklist on the UK site and I have a few questions.

1. For proof of identity it states that I can send in a photocopy of my passport ID page, can anybody confirm if this needs to be certified by an authorized person as specified in the instruction guide?

2. Do I need to provide a Police Certificate (I have no criminal record)

3. My wife needs to apply for an Open work permit, which I intend to send in with my application. I have reviewed the checklist, and it states that she needs to provide a Police Certificate. Can anybody confirm this? She is a primary school teacher, so she would have already been police checked, is this the same thing?

Re: Student Visa Application - Proof of Identity

When I originally applied for my study permit I sent in a photocopy of my passport, not certified, but I think I sent a my birth certificate also (now can't remember if it was a copy or the original, sorry). I definately didn't get a police check.

This was a few years ago, so I don't know whether the rules have now changed.
