student in US, permanent residency in Canada
 

I got interview waiver. I am going to get medical done tomorrow.

I am coming to Canada with my son and wife. I have a couple of problems:

a. i have not finished my study in the US, I thought I would finish, but my dissertation is going to take more time (possibly two more years) and more work in proximity of my supervisor.

So, how would I be able to maintain my permanent residency of Canada and the study in the US?

What is the deadline once i get my Permanent residency visa?

Is there any provision for student of my kind to postpone my entry to Canada?

I will come to Canada even if I need to leave my study unfinished. But just curioius if there is any provision that would be in my favor.

Can I come back to continue the education right after (like one month, two months) my entry to Canada?

Your PR visas will be valid 12 months past medicals and you must land by that
time or lose them. Once you land and establish your residency in Canada you may
return to US to finish your study, providing that you return in time to meet
residency obligations to maintain your PR status here - you must reside in
Canada for at least 730 days (2 years) in every 5 years period.

I am not clear a bit. What is going to happen, most probably is I am coming to Canada in May 2003. I will stay there until
August 2003. Will that be enough to establish my residency?

Thereafter, if I leave for the US and continue my education for three years and then come back to Canada for good, will it be okay? I am sure I will not need three years. two years will be more than enough though.

The same will apply for my dependents, right?

I wouldn't risk staying out of Canada for 3 years straight - it would leave you
with no margin for even emergency travel. Just finish your education in 2 years
as planned and come back.

Unlike the past, you can now land in Canada and depart virtually
immediately without establishing residence in Canada.

Definitely leave some time spare in that 3 years out of Canada permitted
in case of emergencies!
