A decent 2 bedroom in Toronto will run probably $1000-$1500 p/m. The closer to downtown the more expensive.

In Manchester the OH and I lived in an apartment in the heart of the city centre and paid £500 p/m. When we came here we wanted the same but for the £500 a month we were pushed to find anywhere even close to downtown that wasn't either completely off the transport links or a total dump.

Honestly, if you are looking for a city with affordable student housing then Toronto is not the place. It's the worst thing about living here for me right now.

Yes, sadly $800 in Toronto will not get you very far in renting a place. I guess that it is one of the pains of moving when the currency and economy has moved against you. You might find that some of the more ‘affordable’ apartments are at the ends of the subway ride in some of the low rise apartment buildings. The upside is that some of these places will give you a lot more space for your money then a downtown condo apartment.

Go to Kijiji.ca and select Toronto and then you can browse the rental ads to see what is available.

Not to be rude but that probably isn't going to happen unless you are prepared to live further out of the city or are willing to live in a dump.

We went to see one $600 1 bedroom apartment when we first arrived and I honestly wouldn't let a dog live there, the place was a hole and also had a long term bedbug problem according to info we later read online.
